Aquaman 2 Is Officially Happening

For decades Aquaman was one of the less-appreciated superheroes in the DC Comics mythology (to put it lightly), but no longer. Following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and full DC Extended Universe debut in Justice League, Jason Momoas Arthur Curry finally snagged the spotlight for himself in a standalone movie, and several months later, Aquaman is now the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. With a performance like that, its no wonder that Warner Bros has already started developing Aquaman 2, which is officially confirmed for a 2022 release. Cue the horrible Pitbull cover!

Warner Bros announced today (via EW) that Aquaman 2 will be released on December 16, 2022. So well have to wait a little longer than usual for the sequel, but it is on the way. Given how successful Aquaman ended up being during its time in December, Warner Bros and DC presumably think Aquaman 2 will have the best chance of repeating such success by staying within that month. Naturally Jason Momoa will reprise Arthur Curry, but theres no word yet on if James Wan will return to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, one of several screenwriters who worked on the first Aquaman movie, will pen Aquaman 2.

Even though Aquaman has earned a more mixed critical reception, theres no question that its been a huge hit with over $1.1 billion under its proverbial belt, making it the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2018. Frankly, Warner Bros not moving forward with a sequel would have been the more baffling move, and its worth noting that Aquaman 2 isnt the only way the studio is looking to expand Aquamans side of the DCEU. There is also a spinoff centered on The Trench in the works, but thats expected to be handled by a brand-new creative team, and none of the main Aquaman characters will appear in that story.

Aquaman ended with Arthur Curry defeating his half-brother Orm and ascending to the Atlantean throne with Mera by his side. The underwater kingdoms were at peace again, but that can only last for so long in a comic book media universe. Case in point, the mid-credits scene revealed that Black Manta survived his clash with Arthur in Sicily and had been rescued by Dr. Stephen Shin, a marine biologist desperate to prove to humanity that Atlantis exists. Shin asked for Black Mantas help to find the underwater nation, and the mercenary agreed in exchange for Shins helping seeking revenge on Arthur. One would imagine that this is what Aquaman 2 will be about: Shin and Manta using whatever forces and resources at their disposal to infiltrate Atlantis and cause trouble for the King of the Seven Seas.

The Awesome Villains Broken Lizard Wants The Super Troopers Crew To Chase

In the film nerd community, few topics can get conversations started more quickly than the discussion of a crossover event -- look at the success of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DCEU if you have any doubt of that fact. That said, that idea of crossovers is not limited to blockbuster franchises, so CinemaBlend recently decided to ask the Broken Lizard crew what villains they would want to chase in a potential follow-up to Super Troopers 2. Taking that idea and running with it, the guys had some excellent ideas from the DC and Star Wars worlds. The comedy troupe told us:

Jay Chandrasekhar: Jack Nicholson!Kevin Heffernan: Just as a villain? Or as a-Jay Chandrasekhar: As The Joker!Erik Stolhanske: I would like to run into Solomon Grundy. He'd be a great bad guy.Steve Lemme: I think take on Jabba the Hutt.

Not a bad assortment of bad guys for a group of hilarious highway patrolmen who have thus far mostly gone after crooked cops and stoned drivers. Jay Chandrasekhar would want to see Broken Lizard take on Jack Nicholson's Joker from Tim Burton's original Batman movie, while Erik Stolhanske would take things into the supernatural realm by having the Super Troopers cops face off against Solomon Grundy -- the DC zombie who was born on a Monday. Then there's Steve Lemme, who thinks they could head to the galaxy far, far away to take on Jabba the Hutt. While the odds of any of these crossovers happening seem pretty slim (the rights issues would create massive headaches), this most certainly shows how far Broken Lizard appears willing to push the limits of what the Super Troopers brand can do.

Of course, whether or not a third Super Troopers movie will ever actually happen largely depends on the success of Super Troopers 2. After all, the fact that this belated sequel even exists is largely due to the fact that Broken Lizard was able to raise money for the production budget through Kickstarter. In fact, when we asked about the status of Beerfest 2/Potfest, the Broken Lizard crew explained that Super Troopers 2's box office would play a substantial role indicating their ability to take on future sequels. If that is the case for the Beerfest follow-up, then it is likely also the case for Super Troopers 3.

Into The Spider-Verse Writer Reveals Yet Another Stan Lee Cameo

Since the passing of Stan Lee in November, fans have been holding on to any remnant of the Marvel Comics legend, especially through whats left of his on-screen cameos. Oddly enough, the latest Marvel release Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has a slew of sneaky Stan Lees all over its beautiful canvas. Producer Chris Miller has just revealed another one. Check it out:

Yep! There he is, standing in between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, seemingly throwing down his shades to give the kid a look before moving through the city. Its a clever little hidden nod to the late great comic book creator and one of many in Into the Spider-Verse.

As Chris Miller says in his recent tweet, this is the third cameo to be revealed involving Stan Lee. A couple days ago, fans geeked out when one of the movies animators showed off a stealthy frame of Stan Lee doing his iconic web shooter pose inside a train while displaying a frame by frame look at a scene where Miles is thwipping across town.

Theres more where that comes from too, as Chris Miller confirms that Stan is featured all over the movie. Animators all wanted a shot at doodling the legend in the movie, so he can be spotted in unsuspecting locations throughout the film filled with spider-heroes.

The reveal comes just in time for the filmmakers to promote the Blu-ray release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse coming in March. The movie was already passionately received by just about everyone, so tons of people are going to want to own this one. Now, theres also an implied challenge for owners of the home release to find the remaining cameos. Especially since audiences would be able to pause and slow down the movie to look for them.

The Spider-Verse cameo fans will most remember is the one that features his voice, in a both touching and funny scene when Miles Morales buys a Spider-Man suit from comic book shop owner Stan Lee following the death of Chris Pines Spider-Man, before Jake Johnsons cynical and more seasoned version comes along from another universe.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released just a month after Stan Lees passing, making the inclusion of a cameo all the more special and precious. Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord recalled that the icon was an idea machine who pitched them with at least seven ideas about his animated cameo.

The one they went with was a perfect farewell for Stan Lee to his most personal creation, though who knows what his Avengers: Endgame cameo will bring? In the meantime, you can look for more Stan Lees when Into the Spider-Verse is released on Blu-ray on March 19.
