Covering the film industry on a daily basis presents challenges. This is hardly a complaint. More of an observation, and one I was reminded of beautifully over the weekend. Because we cover every step of production for the major blockbusters. It's very easy to forget that movies can still surprise people. Can still delight people. Can still shock and awe, in the best possible ways.

This popped up on a lazy Saturday evening, when my 10-year-old son Brendan was searching for a new movie to watch. We both realized together that he'd yet to see Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and the Wasp. (Scheduling prevented him from coming to the press screening with me, and then life just continued to get in the way until now.) And because we'd recently watched the Avengers: Endgame trailer together on the day that it dropped, I realized it'd be pretty important to watch Wasp -- especially that mid-credits scene -- so that he understands fully what's going on when Endgame finally opens in April.

And he really dug Ant-Man and the Wasp (and I was reminded that the sequel is a ton of fun). Paul Rudd's father-daughter relationship with Abby Ryder Fortson is delightful. Peyton Reed and his team came up with very creative ways to use Hank Pym's shrinking and expanding tech in action sequences and fights. Hannah John-Kamen is a formidable threat as Ghost. And Michael Pena's "truth serum" bit remains one of the funniest routines in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But the real joy came in the mid-credits scene. By now, I'm virtually numb to it. I've watched the scene a dozen times, combing Michelle Pfeiffer's dialogue for hints about what might happen to the stranded Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). "Don't get sucked into a time vortex" essentially translates into "Scott Lang will get sucked into a time vortex." Got it.

But when Hank (Michael Douglas), Janet (Pfeiffer) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lillie) turn to dust, I turned to look at Brendan... and his face was something like this:

It was magical. Somehow, it was far better than the time I saw the scene play out on its own. Because even in that moment, I was borderline prepared for it. Ant-Man and the Wasp has to have some consequence for our heroes heading into Avengers: Endgame. The surprise was seeing what it might be. But Brendan, I can tell you, had NO idea it was coming. And it blasted him through the wall.

Personally, I needed that. While I remain ridiculously impressed with the magic spell that Marvel Studios has been able to cast over audiences for the better part of 10 years, there is an element of grind that comes with nitpicking every ounce of footage and speculating on numerous directions that the overall story can go. Brendan was able to avoid all of that (as he should), and just enjoy the story for what it is, and what it can deliver.

And it makes me envious of all of you out there who are avoiding every piece of Avengers: Endgame marketing. Godspeed!

Avengers: Endgames Writers Have Characters They Wish Got More Screen Time

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. If you haven't seen it in theaters, look away!

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for two weekends, and continues to break box office records and make an outstanding amount of money. The Russo Brothers crafted a complicated and epic story, and the movie is so dense that it warrants a re-watch or two. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were tasked with writing the project and balancing out its large ensemble of characters, and did so masterfully.

Given Endgame's massive critical and financial success, you could definitely says that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely accomplished their goals. But it turns out that the writers still wish certain characters got more time together. McFeely recently opened up about those missed opportunities, saying:

Steve and Bucky would've been good. Rocket and Groot could've had another moment. [Black] Panther and Okoye, even Hope and Scott Lang. Lang in many ways is the driving force of this story. He didn't get time to really have a moment with Hope.

Just when you thought that Avengers: Endgame included everything possibly could, it turns out that the writers would have liked to add a few more reunion scenes during the movie's final battle. And after looking at their list of scenes, the fans might actually agree.

Stephen McFeely's comments to the LA Times might have originally surprised moviegoers, but they make a great deal of sense. After the surviving heroes finish their Time Heist and acquire the Infinity Stones, Thanos from the past arrives and lays waste to the Avengers Compound. All seems lost, until the dusted characters arrive in droves, and the most ambitious MCU battle begins.

During this sequence, there are plenty of reunions and interesting character pairings occurred, as the heroes who were absent from the last few hours got their time to shine. But some of them got cut for time, and they're even more noticeable after hearing the writers point them out. Most of these relationships will continue in future movies, although Steve and Bucky are presumably the exception.

Thanos' victory in Infinity War accompanied a gut-punch of a scene, where audience was left to watch in horror as countless characters faded to dust. It was heartbreaking to watch Rocket lose Groot, and Bucky was the first hero to fall. Those characters reunions might have deserved a bigger spotlight, although Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had to edit down all of their original idea for the battle.

Even for being dusted, Bucky wasn't given a ton to do in Avengers: Endgame. He didn't take on the mantle of Captain America, and didn't get a huge reunion with Steve Rogers before the latter eventually time travelled again. The future of the MCU is largely a mystery, so it should be interesting to see how the characters are serviced in a post-Endgame world.

While Ant-Man And The Wasp did a great job as a story capitalizing on the previous on-screen adventures of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne, there is one plot thread from their first movie that has yet to be concluded. At the end of Ant-Man, Mitchell Carson (played by Martin Donovan) was shown grabbing a vile of Cross Particles before escaping the soon-to-be-imploded Pym Tech building, and in the last three years we haven't heard anything about his whereabouts or what he's done with the shrinking material. It remains as a lingering mystery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it should be recognized that director Peyton Reed knows it's a question worthy of answering, and told me in a recent interview,

It's certainly something we talked about, because it was this dangling thing from the first movie: there are some Cross Tech particles out there. So we talked for a long time about whether we were going to actively pursue it in this movie, and we eventually sort of felt like, 'I don't feel like we want to double back and deal with that thing if it's not germane to the plot of this movie.' But it's still out there!

Earlier this week I sat down with Peyton Reed at the 10 Years of Art in the Marvel Cinematic Universe event at the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, and it was in the midst of our conversation that I brought up Mitchell Carson. I was curious if the character was ever in the mix for the story being told in Ant-Man And The Wasp, and while Reed confirmed that there were discussions about him, they ultimately decided to dedicate more focus to the story they wanted to tell.

What gives this story an extra little twist is that there almost was a definitive end to Mitchell Carson's arc in the first Ant-Man... until there wasn't. As Peyton Reed explained, the production actually filmed a scene for the end of the movie where Carson has a final confrontation with Scott Lang, allowing him to retrieve the dangerous technology, but that sequence was left on the cutting room floor. Said Reed,

We shot a thing for the first Ant-Man that we eventually cut from the movie, which was a Mitchell Carson scene, because originally he got blown up in the Pym Tech implosion, and survived it, and was scarred. And then we had a thing sort of at the end where he was behind a desk at a hotel room or whatever, and a man was coming to take him out. And we actually shot that. And we shot it when poor Martin Donovan had Sciatica. He had serious back issues, so we didn't end up using it.

Of course, there are still many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies coming in the future, and nobody expects that the Ant-Man And The Wasp series will stop after just two titles. Obviously it's not clear now how exactly Mitchell Carson could take advantage of the rare technology he possesses in a third blockbuster, but that's for Peyton Reed, Paul Rudd, and the other creatives to figure out between now and then.

For now, fans can endlessly enjoy both Ant-Man and Ant-Man And The Wasp, the latter having been released on digital this past Tuesday. And if you're more into physical media, the film will be available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD starting October 16th.
