Whether it's Unforgiven, True Grit or any number of Liam Neeson movies, there is something inherently appealing about seeing older dudes kicking serious ass. In The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot, actor Sam Elliot takes on the role of a total badass who is almost mythic in his badassery. At the beginning of this trailer, Ron Livingston's character provides the exposition we need to know Sam Elliot's character, Calvin Barr. This is a guy with a legendary reputation, the subject of countless tall tales among those who knew him and a man for whom the feats documented in Chuck Norris facts would seem tame. It gave me a Big Fish vibe, that these stories are products of wild imaginations taking kernels of truth and spinning wondrous yarns.

When we see Sam Elliot's character being mugged, you figure this trailer can go one of two ways: either this guy never was what they say, or is no longer, and he is going to get beat up, or the stories are true and these thieves made a grave miscalculation. Thankfully, it turns out to be the latter.

What's surprising is that from there, the trailer doesn't turn into the movie that the title might lead you to think it is. If you only knew the title, you might think this would be a fun and outlandish action movie with a larger than life badass character at its center. But what we get is a movie that is much more serious in tone.

It is about a badass character, but one that lives with regret. Even the more fantastical story elements are played straight. Sam Elliot looks brilliant in the role, coming across every bit the badass that the film's incredible title promises, while having none of the carefree attitude you might expect from someone who could be dubbed the most interesting man in the world.

In this alternate history/fantasy world, Bigfoot is real and he is the source of some sort of pandemic threatening the entire world. For whatever reason, the powers that be need to enlist Calvin Barr, who I presume is a legendary hunter as well, to track the mythical creature down and kill it, thus saving the world once more.

At the same time, we are seeing Calvin Barr's past, when he killed Hitler, a decision that he now regrets, even if he had it coming. Like many great cinematic killers, Sam Elliot's character takes no pride in his skills. I expect this may cause some inner conflict for him when he is once again called upon to take a life.

This all makes for a very interesting trailer and I imagine a fascinating film because this movie is playing with different genres and fantasy elements, all while playing everything straight with a serious and melancholy tone. It is an adventure film, a contagion movie and a World War II story all in one.

I was in to see this movie based on the title alone, but this trailer has me truly curious how such a unique story with a surprising tone will all come together. Not to mention that Sam Elliot is always worth watching, especially coming off of his brilliant and heartbreaking turn in A Star is Born.

Why The Conjuring Universe Doesnt Plan To Make Horror Comedies

We are now five movies deep into The Conjuring Universe, and thus far genre and objectives have been fairly consistent between all of the titles. To date, they've all been R-rated horror films built to terrify audiences. Thus far it's led to great worldwide success, with the entire international box office haul already totaling over $1 billion, and it's partially because of that success so far -- as producer Peter Safran explains -- that fans shouldn't expect any upcoming titles to start getting experimental with tone:

There really haven't been [any talks about that]. We try to have a certain consistency in the films in terms of what their core values and concepts are - the idea of faith, potential loss of faith; the idea that good and evil exist; and you're only real armor against evil is your faith, whatever that faith may be. So I think they're all going to live in that world, so I don't see them becoming 'lighter,' but I also don't see them becoming darker than what we're doing with The Nun, for example.

There is a tendency for franchises to start evolving and changing as they grow, but The Conjuring Universe apparently isn't quite there at this point. For now, the movies have hit a sweet spot with audiences (it helps that we are in the midst of a horror renaissance), and for now there is a specific goal at the heart of all these features that is going to stay consistent for the foreseeable future.

With a plan to keep the general tone the same for now, The Conjuring Universe is going to have to start getting creative in other areas. Thus far there has been a heavy focus on haunted houses, which is a classic in good vs. evil movies, but they'll have to start evolving beyond that. Peter Safran has specifically said that they will be moving away from that particular subgenre for The Conjuring 3 -- but the big question is in regards to what direction they turn. As I've written about before, I'd love to see werewolves be given some serious consideration.

Of course, all of this is the status quo now, but who is to say what direction things go in the future. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was built on the back of origin stories in the formation of Phase One, and with Phase Two they moved to a more "Superheroes-Plus" formula as they tried to mix genres together. The Conjuring Universe may not be at a place right now where evolution is necessary, but that time comes eventually for all expanded franchises -- because the alternative is staleness and death.

Following in the footsteps of Corin Hardy's The Nun, next up for The Conjuring Universe will be Gary Dauberman's untitled Annabelle 3 (set for release on July 3, 2019), and, as we revealed earlier this week, the plan is to follow it up with The Conjuring 3 -- which is currently aiming to film next year. Thanos Could Have Been Shirtless In Avengers: Infinity War

Thanos was an imposing character in Avengers: Infinity War, but he looks even more imposing sans shirt. A new art book dedicated to Avengers: Infinity War is set to be released this week and an early look at some of the pages includes concept art of Thanos that presents him with wearing nothing above the waist. The new book, titled Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War - The Art of the Movie (via Twitter user @adaspidey) dives deep into all the various different ideas that were presented for pretty much every character who appears in the massive Marvel team-up movie, but for obvious reasons, the internet is getting very excited about shirtless Thanos.

We see Thanos transition visually over the course of the film. When we first see him in the opening sequence of Avengers: Infinity War Thanos is fully clothed and also wearing a decent amount of armor. Over the course of the film, as Thanos picks up Infinity Stones, the armor goes away. The man is becoming more confident in his power and thus the armor is no longer necessary. It seems that this image would indicate that the idea was that Thanos might have become so powerful near the end of Infinity War that he didn't feel he needed so much as a shirt.

The image of shirtless Thanos also reveals that the Titan hadn't made it through all of his various battles without a few scars. We saw sleeveless Thanos in the final version of Avengers: Infinity War, so we saw some of these scars, but it turns out he had quite a few more.

How we'll see Thanos in the forthcoming Avengers 4 is largely unknown. He's still in possession of the Infinity Stones, but his Gauntlet is pretty thrashed, so it's not clear how useful they will be to him. He could end up back in his full armor if he needs it to fight off the Avengers, or we could end up actually seeing shirtless Thanos in the new movie. He's apparently retired to a small shack near a lake someplace, so if he wants to walk around without clothes on, he can likely do it now. It's not like he has to be presentable for anybody.

While Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 were filmed back-to-back, and thus a lot of things, like character design and costume, were likely done for both films at the same time, it's unlikely that much of what can be found in the new book will be particularly useful spoilers. Any character designs that are being used in the new film were almost certainly left out of this one so that fans wouldn't get an early look. Having said that, we should be getting a look at what all the Marvel heroes will look like in Avengers 4 soon, as the first trailer should be hitting soon.

The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer Highlights One Major Change From the Comics

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has only ever used its comic predecessors as a starting point to tell new and different stories. The newest trailer for Avengers: Infinity War highlighted one specific change that the new movie will make to the Infinity Gauntlet comic that inspired it. It clarified, to a point, exactly what Thanos' motivations are for hunting down the Infinity Stones and what he plans to do as soon as he has them all. He's going to wipe out half the universe because he doesn't feel the universe is currently in balance.The trailer doesn't go into exactly why things are not currently "perfectly balanced" but it appears that we'll get our answers in Avengers: Infinity War as the trailer shows us a brief moment that looks to be part of a flashback sequence, Thanos walking with a child who is very likely Gamora. This may be part of the story that Gamora is telling at the beginning of the trailer. It's a quite specific goal for Thanos to have to wipe out half of the universe. Clearly, something happened to him in the past that made him decide that this was a necessary thing to do.It seemed fairly clear early on that Thanos' motivations would be different in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than they were in the comics that inspired it, we just didn't know exactly what they would be. In the comics, Thanos has a somewhat more mundane reason for doing what he does. He's trying to impress a girl. Specifically, he's trying to win the affection of the personification of Death by taking control of all life in the universe via the Infinity Stones. Interestingly, the trailer does make one passing reference to the comic inspiration that we see in the trailer. Gamora mentions that if Thanos gets all the Infinity Stones he can wipe out half the life in the universe with a snap of his fingers. We know this is true because, in the comics, he did exactly that.

In the comics eliminating half of all life was a means to an end, but here, it appears that doing so is the actual goal. Perhaps Thanos is just worried about universal overpopulation. Maybe galactic food supply is getting low. Whatever it is, he thinks the galaxy would just be better off with fewer people in it. He specifically states that half of humanity will survive, so he's apparently going to be fair about which half goes and which half stays. He's not going to destroy all humans just so every member of some other planet can live. Although, since they tried to stop him, I'm guessing half the Avengers won't get to hang around.
