Halloween: Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Halloween is no longer just the night Michael Myers came home, it's now the night Laurie Strode came to fight! After much hype and the sequel slate being wiped clean, the direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 classic has finally landed. Which means it's time to rate and discuss this new contender to the horror throne.

Critically, Halloween has done rather well, with our own Eric Eisenberg saying the following in his official review:

It's simultaneously both a wonderful tribute to the story that started it all, and a post-modern reflection that often giddily subverts everything that's perfect about the legacy of the killer Michael Myers.

Of course, this isn't Critic's Corner, it's Rate and Discuss. Which means we want your thoughts about what Halloween did right, what it did wrong and what it should do going forward. How Much Jordan Peele's Us Might Make Opening Weekend

Jordan Peele, once best known for his work on the Comedy Central sketch show Key and Peele, announced himself as a serious filmmaker to watch with 2017s Get Out. Now hes back with his follow-up, Us, and if theres any sophomore slump, it doesnt look like it will be at the box office. The early tracking is in and Us is looking at a $35 million opening weekend.

The early tracking just hit today, and could/possibly will get adjusted in time, but right now Us is projected to open with $35 million, with the potential to possibly go as high as $40 million, according to Deadline. An opening of $35 million would put Us just above the $33.3 million Get Out did when it opened in February two years ago.

Get Out had serious legs instead of being front-loaded at the box office. It rode critical acclaim to and word of mouth to make $176 million domestically and $255.4 million worldwide, and eventually also earned four Academy Award nominations and one win for Jordan Peele's screenplay.

Us could find itself in a position to outperform these initial forecasts depending how things go in the coming weeks. Us has its world premiere at SXSW on March 8. Last year A Quiet Place, which was also tracking to open in the mid $30 million range, opened at $50 million after making a ton of noise at its SXSW premiere. Horror is hot right now and similar buzz would certainly help Us to also overperform.

Jordan Peeles film also may have an advantageous release date in terms of competition. Universal moved Us from its previous release date of March 15 to March 22. That puts it one week further away from Disneys Captain Marvel, which will be in its third weekend now when Us opens. While that film is not necessarily direct competition, there is probably some audience overlap as there isnt any other new competition from major studios.

Opening opposite Us is Hotel Mumbai, starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, but the next big release is Dumbo on March 29. Competition for the horror dollar doesnt come until April 15 with the remake of Pet Sematary.

And make no mistake, Us is a pure horror movie. Jordan Peele has acknowledged that Get Out and its status as a social thriller wasnt his initial intention, and this time he really wants to make something that is firmly in the horror genre. We only have the trailers to go on so far, but it looks like he has succeeded because this movie looks like the stuff of nightmares.

Us tells the story of a family whose peace and happiness is shattered when a group of dppelgangers begin to terrorize them. Us stars Winston Duke, Lupita Nyongo, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex.

Jude Law Is Still Dodging Questions About Captain Marvel Role

The next big entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels closer than ever now that we've crossed the border into 2019, but there's still a lot we don't know about Captain Marvel, including the identity of the character being played by Jude Law. When the actor was originally cast it was believed he was playing Mar-Vell, the comic character that held the Captain Marvel moniker prior to Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. However, when recently asked if he was playing Captain Marvel, the actor insisted that wasn't the case. According to Law...

No, I'm not. Brie Larson is Captain Marvel.

Of course, immediately after saying this, Jude Law makes a joke that the "Marvel Police" might shoot him for saying that. On the one hand, he might be joking about the fact that the one thing we all know, that Brie Larson is playing Captain Marvel, is the sort of thing he could get in trouble for saying. Of course, if Jude Law were playing Mar-Vell, there's an argument to be made that he is, in fact, playing Captain Marvel, meaning this question is a bit dicier than it might appear.

The question came as part of an "autocomplete interview" with Wired where Jude Law, and his Vox Lux co-star Natalie Portman, answered questions that came up as part of Google autocomplete search results. This means that a not insignificant number of people have apparently searched for the question "Is Jude Law Captain Marvel?" Certainly, while Brie Larson may be playing the title role in the film, there are still enough people who are curious as to how Jude Law's character fits into the story to ask such a question.

While Jude Law may not be Captain Marvel, it does appear that he is playing Mar-Vell. A slideshow of images recently posted to a Disney website outed Law's character as Mar-Vell at one point. The title of the image has since been changed to call Law "Leader of the Starforce," so it appears Marvel still isn't quite ready to let the cat out of the bag.

Of course, other leaks and rumors have claimed that Law is playing a different role, Yon-Rogg is one potential character that Law might actually be playing, so at this point, it seems we really won't know for sure until the movie comes out and confirms what's going on.

What does seem likely is that the simple fact that Jude Law's role is being held back is important. It probably means that knowing who Jude Law is playing would reveal something about the movie they don't want us to know. If that's the case then maybe he isn't actually playing Mar-Vell after all, as that doesn't seem like much of a spoiler, but who knows?

Unfortunately, Dolph Lundgren doesn't elaborate on his comments, which he made during a Q&A at Monster-Mania Con 42 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey over this past weekend. That means we have no idea exactly how this idea of Apollo Creed returning in Creed II was originally supposed to be handled.

Sylvester Stallone has recently stated that he now feels the decision to kill Apollo Creed in Rocky IV may have been the wrong one, if only because he so enjoyed working with actor Carl Weathers. Perhaps that led Stallone, who co-wrote the screenplay for Creed II, to try and find a way to include him.

Obviously, it seems unlikely that the actual plan had been to include Apollo Creed's ghost. Perhaps there would have been a dream sequence of some kind where either Rocky or Adonis Creed finds himself across from Apollo. Of course, just creating a "ghost" version of Apollo would have been one of the more complicated things in the movie. Creed II isn't exactly a visusal effects blockbuster but a lot of that would have been necessary to bring Apollo Creed back.

However you look at it, it feels awkward, which is probably why the scene never made it into the final film. Still, the desire to include Apollo, and Carl Weathers, in the movie in some way certainly makes sense. It's understandable that people would want to try. There's just no good way to do it.

And at the same time, if Apollo Creed doesn't die in Rocky IV, then Creed II, really the entire Creed franchise becomes an entirely different pair of films. Apollo's death in Rocky IV is one of the iconic moments of the entire series.

In the end, bringing Brigitte Nielsen back for Creed II was clearly something that was much easier to do. And it was certainly impactful as well. Nielsen's return helps put the story of Ivan Drago into a context that we never got to see in Rocky IV. It makes the villain of the earlier movie a much more sympathetic character in the sequel.

While bringing Apollo back in any way would have been a nice nod, it would not have meant as much to the actual story. And who knows. There's always Creed III.
