The Funny Joke Disney Played On Kevin Smith After His Heart Attack

Writer, director, podcaster and professional fanboy Kevin Smith suffered a nearly fatal heart attack a little over a week ago, and in the wake of that, he has communicated some sincere and candid reflections about the experience and his life in general. Kevin Smith has spoken about making some lifestyle changes to improve his health moving forward like going vegan, and with that in mind, the folks at Disney Channel played a solid joke on the filmmaker, taking something he told them about and running with it.

This would be highly embarrassing if the folks at Disney Channel really did mistake Kevin Smith for Kevin James, but in fact they just remembered what Kevin Smith said and decided to give him a good chuckle. Being heartfelt and serious is often the mode of behavior in situations like these, and I'm sure that Kevin Smith received plenty of well-wishes of that nature, but laughter is the best medicine, and Disney Channel delivered in spades here. The joke is so good that Kevin Smith doesn't even want to eat the cookie and he even played along in his Instagram post, thanking his 'TV wife' Leah Remini. This just goes to show how much the people at Disney Channel were paying attention when Kevin Smith relayed the anecdote about getting mixed up with King of Queens' Kevin James. The best and most thoughtful gifts are those that show you were paying attention, and it's clear the cable network was.

If there is one thing Disney tends to get right, it's the details, and this 'get well soon' card and cookie not only references the Fatman on Batman's mix up with The King of Queens, but also touches on the transition to veganism and delivers a Mary Poppins reference. Bravo, though I must admit, I had no idea that there were people who mixed up Kevin Smith with Kevin James. I mean, they are both portly actors named Kevin, but beyond that I struggle to understand the confusion. Isla Fisher and Amy Adams, sure. Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman, definitely. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Javier Bardem, maybe, but this one I don't see.

It is great to see that Kevin Smith is in such good spirits, joking and having fun after such a traumatic event. Even though he's had to have a sober assessment about his diet, he seems to be taking it all in stride, facing life and death with a level of acceptance and gratefulness that is not easy to do. Fortunately, Kevin Smith is on the mend and will hopefully be bringing more of his unique films to audiences again soon. The director seemingly has a lot of projects in the pipeline too, although which ones will really come to light remains to be seen. He has the horror film Killroy Was Here, the final entry in his True North Trilogy Moose Jaws and the long-awaited Jay and Silent Bob Reboot all at some stage of development with fans eager to see them.

A Quiet Place Rate And Discuss

The following will be riddled with spoilers, so don't read any further if you haven't yet seen A Quiet Place.

April is usually a month that doesn't get many blockbusters, but when it comes to 2018's offerings, it looks like that may not stay true for long. Especially if the potential success of John Krasinski's writing / directing debut, A Quiet Place, is anything to go by. After building a steady head of buzz over the past couple of months, the film is now in theaters for the public to enjoy. So if you've partaken in the film's opening weekend festivities, then you're well qualified to rate and discuss the film with us here!

Critics certainly seem to love A Quiet Place, as the early reactions reported on the film's debut were overall positive. Adding to that same said throng was our own official review, which praised the film with the following plaudits:

Gripping, earnest, and nail-bitingly tense, John Krasinski's first foray into genre filmmaking is a masterclass instant classic that every horror fan needs to see.

Though it's only a little over an hour and a half in length, there's still plenty to discuss when it comes to A Quiet Place. In particular, the following discussion questions came to mind, and are open for discussing in the comments below. The Grinch Box Office: Stealing Christmas Is Big Money

Illumination Entertainment might night get the same kind of rave reviews for their films that Pixar gets on a regular basis, but what they definitely do get is massive box office results. They have a massively successful franchise in place thanks to the Despicable Me franchise, but even their other original and adapted material finds an audience. The latest to do so is Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier's The Grinch, which crushed competition this weekend with a haul twice as big as any of its competitors. It was easy to predict that The Grinch was going to take the top spot at the box office - as I did in my closing remarks in last week's report - but what the film managed to do is still outpace high expectations. In the days before the animated feature hit theaters it was said that it was going to make something in the range of $50-60 million, and as you can see above the film wound up making a tad bit more than that. It's not exactly a record breaking performance, as it is only the sixth best debut for an Illumination title, and is only the 22nd best November opening of all time, but the folks at Universal Pictures will surely be pleased with the results.

Interestingly, the results are basically on-par with the last attempt Illumination Entertainment made at a Dr. Seuss adaptation. Chris Renaud's The Lorax made a bit more than The Grinch did, with a $70.2 million pull in its first three days, and basically got the same reaction when it came to critical response (The Lorax received a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Grinch is currently at 55%). But while the environment friendly 2012 feature went on to make $348.8 million in its full worldwide run, it's not entirely clear how the story of a fuzzy green creature will ultimately play out.

While The Lorax had some room to dominate for a spell when it was initially released, coming out a few weeks ahead of Gary Ross' The Hunger Games, The Grinch is going to very quickly find itself facing off against titles that will definitely steal large portions of its audience. The first is David Yates' Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which has an entire history of Harry Potter successes at its back, and is set to clash with the animated feature in its second weekend. The other title that the Christmas-themed adventure needs to worry about is Ralph Breaks The Internet, which is coming out in time for Thanksgiving and may steal the attention of big families looking for a night out at the movies. There's a part of me that wonders if this is a movie that would have been better off with a December release, close to the holiday it's celebrating - but looking at the release calendar full of titles like Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Mortal Engines, Bumblebee, and Mary Poppins Returns, it probably wouldn't have had much more luck.

The Grinch is the 11th film released this year to open above $60 million, which is great news for the industry. Unfortunately, the other wide release titles that came out on Friday didn't do quite as well. Julius Avery's Overlord, for starters, was no match for Bryan Singer's Bohemian Rhapsody in its second week, and only managed to make about a third of what the musical biopic took in. The sci-fi World War II feature received positive marks from both critics and audiences (81% on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B" on CinemaScore), but it didn't translate to huge box office earnings. It's definitely a step down for these kinds of smaller Bad Robot productions, as the Cloverfield movies, for example, were way more successful in their first three days (earning $40 million and $24.7 million, respectively).

At the very least the movie's performance is stronger than what Fede Alvarez's The Girl In The Spider's Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story did this weekend, making just a little over $8 million. The movie has a reported budget $5 million more than Overlord - $43 million versus $38 million - and received less positive reviews, and will ultimately be seen as a significant disappointment. Sony Pictures was surely hoping that this film would give them the chance at growing a new studio tentpole franchise (something that isn't related to Spider-Man), but much like how things played out with David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, that didn't really work.

There is, however, some good news for Sony this week, and it concerns Ruben Fleischer's Venom. Though it has eclipsed $200 million, the movie is fading pretty fast here in the United States, and may get bumped from the Top 10 next week, but it's only getting started in China, which just provided a massive box office boost to its international numbers. The loose Marvel Comics adaptation added a hearty $111 million to its global total this past weekend, which brings its total gross up to $673.5 million. It definitely looks like the studios plan for Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man is working, and it likely means will be getting a whole lot more of them in the near future. Editorially speaking, it's pretty annoying when you consider how it will creatively take away from potential developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the adventures of Tom Holland's version of the wall-crawler, but clearly the audiences has spoken here.

As mentioned earlier, this upcoming weekend should be one of the most significant of 2018 - and could very well see results that are among the biggest of this fall season. Not only will we see the arrival of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in more than 4,000 theaters nationwide, but there will also be the buzzed-about Mark Whalberg-Rose Byrne comedy Instant Family, and Steve McQueen's acclaimed heist thriller Widows. There is going to be a lot of money spent on movie tickets, so be sure to come back next Sunday to see how it all shakes out.

When Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald arrives in theaters later this month, it will have the eyes of millions of fans of J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World. The franchise seeks to build upon a legendary history that young Harry Potter and his Hogwarts classmates could only read about and imagine. A past that will led up to the famed duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald.

In Dumbledore's most esteemed moment, he gained the allegiance of the Elder Wand, one of the three Dealthy Hallows and the most powerful wands to have ever existed. When we meet Jude Law's young Dumbledore in Crimes of Grindelwald, he is not yet in possession of the Elder Wand. However, Eddie Redmayne revealed in an interview with Sirius XM, that Law's wand originally looked as such. J.K. Rowling caught notice of this detail while looking at some raw footage and some movie magic resulted. In Redmayne's words:

They then had to CGI out that wand for quite a substantial amount of the film. It was replaced with, I think, actually the most beautiful wand of all. It's very... sculptural.

Early images of young Dumbledore's wand are rather exquisite to match the elegance and stature of the Hogwarts professor. It's a dark wood root with a stone on one end separated by a gold rim. The Elder Wand, on the other hand, (Gellert Grindelwald's hand, to be precise), is 15 inches long, made of elder wood and has a threstral tail-core, which is described on J.K. Rowling's official site as a "tricky substance only wizards that mastered death can control."

It's all in the details and it's understandable how some confusion might arise if Jude Law's wand looked too much like the notorious wand. Crimes of Grindelwald only marks the second of five planned Fantastic Beasts movies, and the duel is still quite some time away. The upcoming film is set in 1927, just a few months after the events of the first movie, and Albus Dumbledore doesn't obtain the allegiance of the Elder Wand in his duel with Grindelwald until 1945.

In Crimes of Grindelwald, the film will follow Johnny Depp, who was revealed as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: Where to Find Them, as he gathers followers for his dark agenda to raise up pure-blood wizards to rule over Muggles. Eddie Redmayne will return as Newt and reunite with his mentor at Hogwarts, Dumbledore, who enlists him to help stand in the way of the dark wizard's plans.

Jude Law's involvement in the Fantastic Beasts franchise is also highly notable from the Harry Potter films. While much of the cast said they had to go to "wand school," Law did not, maybe because he didn't need it? His fellow cast describes their co-star as a "painter" with the wand, each of them having their own style with their wand flicks along with wand looks to go personally with their characters. Fans can take a closer look at young Dumbledore's wand in Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald which hits theaters on November 16.
