Disney Increased Its Fox Bid To Help Fend Off Comcast

The entertainment world is a fascinating place at the moment. While audiences are eager for more content, there is a major deal looming above three major entities. Both Disney and Comcast are attempting to acquire 20th Century Fox, and its various TV and film properties. While Disney put an offer down six months ago for $52.4 billion dollars in stocks, Comcast rocked the boat last week by upping the ante with a $65 billion cash bid. But it should come to no surprise that the House of Mouse is doubling down on its efforts, as the studio has now increased its price to $71.3 billion, with a mixture in cash and stocks.

News of Disney's new price seemingly starts an all-out bidding war for 20th Century Fox, and all eyes will be on Comcast for a possible another offer. This may shock some casual moviegoers, as Disney's acquisition seemed all but certain in the months since the offer was made. But Comcast is in the race, meaning that Disney might not be able to properties like the X-Men and Fox Searchlight. Cue Disney's new bid, which is 10% higher than that of its competitor. Fox's planned July 10th meeting to decide on the Disney offer has also reportedly been postponed.

Disney's new price, which comes to us from Deadline, is particularly fascinating because its comprised of both stocks and cash. There are pros and cons to cash vs stocks, with Disney offering a mixture of both. While Comcast is offering a cash sum, it would also be heavily taxed. In comparison, Disney's stocks won't be, although they'll have to be monitored for their value in the market.

Comcast and Disney both offer a very different set of consequences with their possible acquisition of 20th Century Fox. If Disney were to buy 20th Century Fox, the implications would be pretty fascinating. CinemaBlend readers have been mostly focused on the ability to bring characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite all being Marvel characters, Fox got the rights to certain heroes before the MCU was even in existence.

Disney's possible acquisition of 20th Century Fox would also put the House of Mouse in a better position come Awards Season. While Disney is a behemoth money making machine, ceremonis like the Academy Awards typically don't favor blockbusters. But Fox also includes Fox Searchlight, which produces challenging Oscar-bait films that are consistently awarded. Recent Searchlight releases include The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Jackie.

Of course, Comcast has its own set of goals in mind, no doubt including Fox's shares in Hulu and networks like FX. We'll just have to wait and see if Comcast and Disney continue battling over the rights to 20th Century Fox. But in the wake of the recent merger of AT&T and Time Warner, anything is possible.

Thor Almost Had A Totally Different Quest In Avengers: Infinity War

When you break it down, Thor's adventure with Rocket and Groot in Avengers: Infinity War is different than every other storyline in the film. While most of the narratives feature established characters meeting other established characters, the quest for the Thanos-killing weapon is different in that it has the God of Thunder and two Guardians meeting someone new: Peter Dinklage's Eitri. It's a curious outlier ultimately -- but interestingly it wasn't the only approach that the filmmakers mulled over. Co-director Joe Russo recently explained,

We explored a lot of different ideas of where Thor could go for that weapon. We even had versions of the story at one time where he was going to visit this sort of ghost of his dead grandfather - which was one version we were playing with that we didn't end up using. I am happy where we had settled.

As is, Avengers: Infinity War finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) on a journey to Nidavellir, which is the realm where his original lightning-conjuring hammer, Mjolnir, was forged. As I recently learned in an email interview with Joe and Anthony Russo, however, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely played around with a few different approaches for that particular story. Namely, there was a version of the script that found Thor going to his grandfather -- presumably Bor -- in order to acquire the Stormbreaker axe and become an equal match for Thanos. It makes one wonder if the idea involved a visit to Valhalla, but sadly Joe Russo didn't elaborate.

In regards to the "one of these things is not like the other" situation mentioned in the opening paragraph, this approach to Thor's weapon acquisition would have actually made it fall in line with the Avengers: Infinity War plotlines. After all, Marvel Cinematic Universe die hards will remember that Bor -- father of Odin -- was briefly featured in the opening vignette of Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World. Had the production moved forward with the angle, one would hope that they would have brought back Tony Curran for the sake of continuity.

As explained by Joe Rosso, Thor's journey to get a new weapon is one of the most important in Avengers: Infinity War, as he is essentially set up to be reality's best hope against Thanos. The Mad Titan basically waltzes in and does whatever he wants throughout the film -- primarily collecting Infinity Stones -- and the audience is left with the lone hope that the God of Thunder will be the one to save the day at the end, as he almost does. Explained Joe Russo,

[Thor] really goes on kind of like a classic heroes' journey. We wanted to create the feeling in the film that Thor was actually going to save the day. So him going to get this weapon that could kill Thanos was a critical part of the story and we had to give a lot of screen time and a lot of strong dramatic interest because we really wanted people invested in that - so that they would be coming into the climax of the film with that feeling.

As we all know now, however, things didn't work out as planned -- and we're now left biting our fingernails furiously in anticipation of next year's Avengers 4.

Clearly next May can't get here soon enough -- but the good news is that you now have the opportunity to watch Avengers: Infinity War as much as you'd like. The film is now available for DigitalHD download, and if you're in the physical copy collecting game, you'll be able to find 4K, Blu-ray and DVD editions on sale August 14th.
