Casino Royales Eva Green Doesnt Think Bond Should Be A Woman

With Daniel Craigs tenure as James Bond soon coming to an end with the 2020 release of Bond 25, Hollywood has been having an ongoing conversation about who should replace the actor as the next 007. As movies are seeing success enlisting female heroines for popular franchises, some have even challenged that the character should be taken on by a woman next. Dont count former Bond Girl Eva Green in on this idea. Heres what she said:

Im for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man. It doesnt make sense for him to be a woman. Women can play different types of characters, be in action movies and be superheroes, but James Bond should always be a man and not be Jane Bond. There is history with the character that should continue. He should be played by a man.

Eva Greens recent comments to Vanity Fair arent in bias to her husband's famous role; she has a powerful point here. James Bond is inherently a male character with a long history as such. To gender-swap the character isnt necessarily a great move for inclusivity or female empowerment, because it ignores much of the roots of Ian Flemings literary character and has women potentially playing second fiddle to Bonds legacy-- instead of finding their own place in the action genre.

Eva Green isnt the first to challenge the idea of Jane Bond. Longtime James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently echoed the actress statement with the words We don't have to turn male characters into women. Let's just create more female characters, along with Rachel Weisz who questioned Why not create your own story rather than jumping onto the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors?

Just as women may certainly be enraged to learn Wonder Woman, who is a character deeply rooted in the feminine was going to be played by a man next, people may look similarly on characters such as James Bond. Though Id argue this certainly doesnt apply to all gender-swap situations. The Oceans franchise isnt particularly rooted in having to be male, so changing it up with a female-led team Oceans Eight was a fun way for the series to continue.

Eva Green moved on to discuss the iconic Bond Girl, a character that the actress is proud to be a part of evolving with her portrayal of Vesper in 2006s Casino Royale. She is passionate about the females depicted alongside James Bond to continue developing away from the bimbos of the past and becoming intelligent and sassy and fascinating onscreen characters.

While Green will not star in Bond 25, the filmmakers are reportedly eyeing Lupita Nyongo to be the next Bond Girl in the upcoming film helmed by Cary Fukunaga. Daniel Craigs James Bond will return to theaters on April 8, 2020.

Five years ago, we were gearing up for a Spider-man sequel for Andrew Garfields iteration. These days, we are here readily awaiting Tom Hollands second take at the character in this summers Spider-Man: Far From Home. Crazy how history repeats itself, isnt it?

(Sadly for some) Andrew Garfields time as the friendly webslinger came to an end when the character was negotiated into the hands of Disneys MCU and the studio had a new direction planned for Spider-Man (...such as turning the character to dust?) Since moving on from the role, Garfield has been taking on various dramatic roles, such as in Martin Scorseses Silence and his Oscar-nominated role in Hacksaw Ridge. His famed Spider-Man role is still very much a part of him, though he recently admitted some satisfaction about waving goodbye to the superhero. Heres what he said, and be forewarned there is an f-bomb...

That was the big learning experience of my creative life, and I have so many feelings about it and I'm still a huge fan of the character. But, it was nice to be able to fling it symbolically across the room for a second. That felt really fucking good, I have to admit!

During a London screening for his upcoming movie Under the Silver Lake, Spider-Man came up in the conversation, since there is apparently a reference to the character in the upcoming film. Andrew Garfield told the audience the Easter egg is coincidental before opening up about the complicated relationship he has with his Spider-Man tenure, expressing both gratitude and the strange satisfaction that came with leaving the role.

Andrew Garfield has discussed how his struggle with bearing the weight of the iconic hero and considering the actor led a franchise that made creative decisions that led to the failure of the franchise and hand off to Disney, Garfield understandably went through some frustrations while playing the role.

Of Course Bill Murray Kept His Speedo From The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is an incredibly important work within the history of Bill Murray working with writer/director Wes Anderson. The actor has worked on every single one of the filmmaker's movies going back to his second, Rushmore, but Life Aquatic is the only one that features Murray as the principal lead. The two men surely share a lot of stories about the making of the film, but it might not surprise you to learn that Murray also kept a little memento. Specifically, he still has the Steve Zissou skintight swimsuit. He recently told us,

I'm not really a fan of the speedo swimming suit, but there is a square version which doesn't look exactly like a speedo which I had to wear in the movie. That was really comfortable, and it wasn't like what we call European, wherever the hell we call it in America. It wasn't a Speedo, but it was the same material, and it was designed by the costumer. So it was beautiful! So I still have it.

It's not uncommon to hear about actors taking home costumes from sets (Ryan Reynolds took a full Deadpool costume, for example), but this is definitely one of the weirder examples of that practice. Paired with co-star Bob Balaban, Bill Murray participated in a roundtable interview in Berlin, Germany last month following the premiere of Isle of Dogs, and it was during this conversation that Murray revealed the story of his pilfered swimsuit. One reporter specifically asked the two actors if there were any costumes that they were tempted to take home... but the speedo tale was unexpected in the moment.

In retrospect, however, this is a wonderfully perfect example of a Bill Murray story. The man has a long reputation for being a laid back guy who takes pleasure in life where he can, and this story perfectly fits within that idea. He wore a comfortable swimsuit on the set of The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou; enjoyed the feel of it; and ultimately decided that he wanted to take it home. It's unclear if he took it with permission or not, but does it really matter?

Funny enough, the not-a-Speedo isn't the only piece of costuming that Bill Murray took from that particular set. Another reporter followed up the story by asking if he still had any of the red caps that Steve Zissou wears in The Life Aquatic, and apparently he has several. Said Murray,

Those are all over the place. I've got mine somewhere. I've got one or two of those somewhere in the museum.
