Nicole Kidman Responds To Aquaman Criticism About Her Age

Although Arthur Curry made his DC Extended Universe debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was one of Justice League's principal players, the character's past is finally being delved into next month in Aquaman. This includes meeting his mother, Atlanna, played by Nicole Kidman. With Kidman being 51 years old and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, being 39 years old, there's been some criticism that Kidman is too young to be playing Arthur's mother, but the actress isn't bothered by these comments, saying:

In the context of the superhero world, it all evens out. Atlanna doesn't really age.

This wouldn't be the first time that there's a small age gap between actors who have a parent/child dynamic in a movie. Remember, Sean Connery played Harrison Ford's father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and he's also only 12 years older than Ford. Still, within the context of Aquaman, Nicole Kidman told Variety that Atlanna, an Atlantean, just ages more gracefully than a human woman does.

For a comic book movie, this is an acceptable reason. Within both the DC and Marvel universes, along with plenty of other sci-fi and fantasy franchises, there are numerous examples of various non-human species aging much more slowly than humans. Superman falls into this category as a Kryptonian, and evidently the DCEU's version of Atlanteans do too. It's a nice perk alongside special physical abilities like enhanced strength and breathing underwater.

It is worth noting, however, that so far, the Aquaman previews have only shown Atlanna in scenes taking place when Arthur Curry is a child. So in that lens, there's no issue with age difference, but it also calls into question whether or not Atlanna will appear in Aquaman's present day scenes. Depending on the DC continuity, sometimes Atlanna is dead when Arthur Curry is an adult, although in the New 52, it was revealed that she was actually alive and well, having faked her death. Maybe that's the case in Aquaman, or maybe something tragic happens to her early in Arthur's life.

While we'll have to wait and see what Aquaman holds in store for Atlanna, Arthur Curry's human father, Thomas Curry (played by Temuera Morrison) will definitely be around for his son's latest adventure. Whether Thomas makes it out alive or not is also unclear, but at least Arthur has one parent for emotional support.

Fresh off saving the world with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Cyborg, Aquaman will see Arthur Curry returning to Atlantis to become its new king, only to get caught in the middle of a conflict between the underwater nation and the surface world. The movie's other notable players include Amber Heard's Mera, Patrick Wilson's Orm, Willem Dafoe's Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta and Dolph Lundgren's Nereus.

We have talked and written about the fact that horror movies are hot in 2018, but few horror flicks to that have debuted this year have honored the classic slasher genre quite like The Strangers: Prey at Night. The film served as a total love letter to classic slasher cinema like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Black Christmas, and that grounded element of the story is what made the film so downright terrifying to star Christina Hendricks. In fact, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Hendricks addressed the down-to-earth and random nature of the horror and explained:

To me it was, it was how completely random it was that someone could just show up and kill you for absolutely no reason that it had nothing to do with the devil or God or. So, they're monsters or aliens. It's literally just, it could happen tomorrow because people are crazy and because you could just have bad luck. So, to me that it's the most terrifying idea in the world.

That's kind of the entire point of The Strangers world, isn't it? Both movies begin with one of the titular slashers arriving on a doorstep to ask, "is Tamara home," and in both cases, the question leads to a full-blown assault that leaves seemingly innocent victims dead merely because they were home. Despite all of the creepy ghosts and goblins that the horror genre has become known for, this sense of realism stands out as the thing that makes The Strangers: Prey at Night so creepy to Christina Hendricks.

This is a stark contrast to other subgenres of horror, particularly with regards to the styles of horror movies that we have seen debut this year. Though The Strangers: Prey at Night is a gritty horror thriller set in an authentic world, 2018 has mostly been defined by movies about demons (Insidious: The Last Key), curses (Truth or Dare), aliens (A Quiet Place), and demonic cults (Hereditary). Even the other notable tentpole slasher film set to debut later this year (David Gordon Green's Halloween), toys with elements of the supernatural in how immortal Michael Myers seems. Amid all of these otherworldly horror romps, The Strangers: Prey at Night stands out as one of the most plausible.

What Mark Hamill Thought About Solo: A Star Wars Story

It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the beloved property, plenty of new content is coming out of the galaxy far, far away. While the fandom may be still recovering from Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the franchise's next standalone movie is right around the corner. Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in a few weeks, helping to expand the history of characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca. Franchise hero Mark Hamill recently saw the film's premiere, and shared his cryptic thoughts via social media.

It looks like Luke Skywalker himself has given his thumbs up. While he kept the details under wraps regarding Solo: A Star Wars Story's contents, it's nice to know that the acclaimed actor/voice actor was happy with the newest standalone film. The pressure is on to deliver another narrative for the franchise's most favorite character, and OG contributors like Mark Hamill's praise carries plenty of weight.

Mark Hamill's Tweet indicates he'll be watching Solo: A Star Wars Story more than once. As such, one has to wonder if director Ron Howard littered the standalone movie with easter eggs and references to the original trilogy? The setting is years before A New Hope, when the Galactic Empire is at the height of its power. As such, there's the potential to bring in a variety of characters and settings from George Lucas' first three films. If Hamill is boasting Solo's rewatchability, maybe there's so much exciting stuff crammed into the standalone film that it warrants another few rounds.

Solo is already set to provide Star Wars fans with much more background about some of the original heroes. Ron Howard's blockbuster will reveal how a younger Han, Lando, and Chewie first became acquainted, complete with Han acquiring the iconic Millennium Falcon. It's also been strongly hinted that the movie would include the famous Kessel Run, which Han cites when he meets Obi-Wan and Luke in A New Hope. Some rumors also indicate that Boba Fett might also make an appearance, which would be a majorly exciting moment for the hardcore fandom.

Overall, the early reception for Solo indicates that movie is a fun ride, albeit not exactly groundbreaking. Considering how high the stakes were for The Last Jedi, it'll be nice to see a Star Wars movie that is a little easier to digest. Mark Hamill's hashtag indicates that he was riding a high after seeing the standalone film, which is high praise. The legendary actor was no doubt able to sit back and enjoy Solo as an audience member; a stark juxtaposition to the pressure around his performance in The Last Jedi.
