Aquaman May Make Even More Money For DC Than We Thought

Back in October, we got our first predictions of what Warner Bros.' Aquaman could make in its opening weekend. The long-range tracking on the DCEU film had it pegged somewhere in the $40 million to $60 million range. Now it's looking like those super early projections may have been a bit low and Aquaman may actually cross $100 million.

Box office analysts who spoke with The Wrap indicated that Aquaman could be the first film to enjoy a $100+ million opening weekend domestically since all the way back in June, when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom debuted to $148 million. The official tracking doesn't come out until Thursday, so that should give us an even clearer picture at exactly where Aquaman might land.

As we've often seen, tracking isn't an exact science, and there are still a few weeks where things can change for the DCEU film in either direction. But whether Aquaman opens domestically above or below $100 million, the point is that the outlook on the film is rosier than it was just a month ago when it was tracking at $40 million to $60 million.

An opening in the $40 million to $60 million range would be in line with the Phase 1 Marvel movies, but it is certainly not a number that is going to blow people out of the water, especially for a film this big and this important.

This is the first DCEU film since the financially and critically disappointing Justice League, and you have to think that Warner Bros. is hoping Arthur Curry can help begin to turn the ship around for the beleaguered DCEU. Plus, have you seen the latest trailer? This thing looks expensive.

If Aquaman does cross $100 million, it will be a stupendous achievement, not just in its own right, but in light of the positively absurd amount of competition it will face in what may be the most stacked weekend of the year.

Disney's family-friendly sequel Mary Poppins Returns arrives in theaters on the Wednesday before Aquaman opens, and it is sure to provide stiff competition. Opening opposite Aquaman is also the Transformers spinoff film Bumblebee and that's not to mention the previous week's releases like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that should still be drawing in audiences.

There are plenty of reasons though to be bull(shark)ish on Aquaman's prospects. Polling indicates that women are especially interested in the film and the final trailer is the best sales pitch yet for the underwater adventure. And what's even more encouraging is that unlike Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, word of mouth on Aquman should be good.

The early reactions are in for the film and it sounds like it is far better than 'just okay,' thus standing as an unequivocal win for Warner Bros. and the best DC film since Wonder Woman or maybe even The Dark Knight.

Why The Changes For Disney's Live-Action Mulan Have Us Excited

Disney is fully intent on remaking its entire library of classic animated movies. The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast were huge smash hits, and while Cinderella didn't hit similar box office numbers, it had solid reviews. Over a billion dollars in tickets sold is enough to convince the Mouse House to keep this strategy going until it remakes everything all over again. One of the next films up to bat is Mulan, which has taken early steps to get us hopeful about the live-action movie because it directly addresses one of the chief criticisms of these remakes.

While these Disney remakes are fun, gorgeous, and full of the spirit that made the original films classics, you wouldn't be over the line for complaining that these movies are basically the same as the animated ones. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Yes, but Disney might be taking this too literally.

Let's take Beauty and the Beast for example. The animated movie is one of the best, if not THE best, movie Disney has ever made. This movie was nominated for an Oscar before there was even a category for animation. There's very little that can to improve this movie... but that's not to say it couldn't have been done. When the Bill Condon-directed version hit theaters last year, it was incredibly loyal to the original; same costumes, same songs, same shots, same dialogue, same plot. If you've seen the 1991 version, then you've pretty much seen this one, too.

True, the live action Beauty and the Beast has new things. It has a few new songs and characters, while fleshing out the backstories of the main players. That's what these movies should be doing, but I'm not convinced that Beauty and the Beast took this far enough. Okay, yeah, Belle's mom died of the plague, but maybe the movie could have devoted that screentime to convincing us on the hard-to-believe romance at the center of the whole movie (something the original doesn't sell super well).

It's admittedly a tough thing to ask. How do you give people something new while delivering on the nostalgia that people want? It's not easy to do, but Mulan seems determined to try.

Recently, a bunch of casting information about the live-action Mulan dropped, illuminating some of the first details about the remake. Of the characters cast for the pending movie, three of them are entirely new to the story. One is a general/mentor played by Donnie Yen and another is Mulan's sister. Guess what? Mulan doesn't have a sister in the animated movie, putting an extra spin on the material.

In addition, and perhaps most importantly, the villain of the movie has been given a huge change. Gong Li is playing a powerful witch, notable for several reasons. The villain of the animated Mulan was Shan Yu, who led a Hun army to conquer China, and it looks like he's been ditched. Secondly, the appearance of a witch means magic, an entirely new element to Mulan. Yeah, the first one had ghosts, but nobody was going around casting spells or curses. This is a relatively major departure, which seems to indicate that this movie is willing to deviate away from the formula in the way that past remakes weren't.

Of course, just because something is being changed doesn't mean it's for the better. There's a rumor that Li Shang, the love interest from the movie, isn't in the live-action version, or that's he's been turned into a different character. This has upset fans that saw Shang as bisexual, and view it as Disney potentially cutting an LGBT character to simplify the story. (In Disney's defense, the romance between Mulan and Shang is in a super moral gray area; she lies to him through 95% of the movie, and he's just cool with that?) Shang's sexuality is never addressed in the movie, so it's technically head-canon, but that doesn't change the fact that the character means something to a lot of people.

Not every remake thus far has just been a simple retread of what's come before. While Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella are mostly the same, The Jungle Book avoids some of these issues. While the movie follows many of the beats of the original, it does so with enough new energy to make it feel fresh. Maybe this is because The Jungle Book is older than, say, Beauty and the Beast, so Disney can get away with bending it a little. It's much harder to do that with a movie from the 90s that is still fresh in a lot of people's minds.

I'm not saying that these movies can't have the same songs, or scenes that people love. I'm pretty sure I'd have burned the theater down if Bill Condon cut "Be Our Guest." Plus, it's difficult to argue for making changes when Disney is just giving people what they want. There were some who got pretty vocal when the director of Mulan mulled over leaving out the songs (they aren't). The trouble is, these movies need to be more imaginative to justify their existence other than "this will make a lot of money." Basically, Disney has to make it so that people will be torn about which version is their favorite. It's arguably much easier to do this with Mulan than a bonafide classic.

The Flash Movie Has Been Delayed Yet Again

For a guy nicknamed The Fastest Man Alive, The Flash sure is taking a while to snag the spotlight for himself. Ever since 2014, there's been a Flash standalone movie in development, but it's continued to be pushed back for various reasons. Today brings yet another delay, and Ezra Miller's commitment to the Fantastic Beasts film series is reportedly part of the reason for it.

According to Variety, while The Flash never formally received the green light from Warner Bros or had a set release date, the plan was for the movie to start shooting next March and be ready to screen in 2020. However, apparently there's still some work being done on the script, and this tweaking means cameras won't be ready to roll by next spring. Additionally, Ezra Miller is reprising Credence Barebone for the third Fantastic Beasts movie, which begins shooting next July. As a result, now the plan is for The Flash to begin production in late 2019, which means it likely won't hit theaters until 2021.

While this news is undoubtedly frustrating for Flash fans who have been waiting for Barry Allen to lead his own movie, I can't blame Warner Bros for prioritizing Fantastic Beasts over The Flash. While the DC Extended Universe has been going through a lot behind-the-scenes adjustments of this year, the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been running more smoothly, and the third movie has been dated for November 20, 2020 since 2016. Given the choice between getting Fantastic Beasts 3 or The Flash off the ground first, the former is definitely a more logical call.

The Flash was part of the initial DCEU slate that was announced in late 2014, and was scheduled to come out in March 2018. However, approximately a year and a half later, Seth Grahame-Smith, the movie's first director, dropped out due to creative differences, which kicked off the first of many obstacles for The Flash. Dope's Rick Famuyiwa was later hired to replace Grahame-Smith, but then he dropped out months later, also due to creative differences.

As of last February, Game Night duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are the latest directors attached to The Flash. But now those two will have to wait even longer to bring The Flash to life, and given this movie's troubled history, I wonder if Daley and Goldstein might exit as well due to this delay.

Ezra Miller's Flash first cameoed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both as a vision tacked onto the end of Bruce Wayne's Knightmare and through security footage obtained by Lex Luthor. After briefly popping into Suicide Squad to apprehend Captain Boomerang, Barry Allen made his full, proper debut in Justice League, where he teamed up with Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and Superman to repel Steppenwolf's invasion. Along with Miller, The Flash is expected to feature Billy Crudup reprising Henry Allen and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West.

One of the first movies that was on Warner Bros.' initial DCEU slate in 2014 was The Flash, which was supposed to hit theaters in early 2018 before it was inevitably pushed back again and again. Thanks to multiple changes in writers and directors, DC's movie has gone through numerous iterations and only recently landed a new set of filmmakers.


It has been reported that the troubled Flash movie has been delayed once more and is unlikely to hit theaters until 2021. According to Variety, the movie was expected to commence shooting in March
