One Change John Boyega Is Making For Star Wars Episode IX

It hasn't even been two and a half years since the Star Wars film franchise relaunched in 2015 with The Force Awakens, but already our gazes are turned to Episode IX, the conclusion of the current trilogy. With The Last Jedi having only come out four months ago and Solo: A Star Wars Story arriving later this month, it will be a while until we start learning specific plot details about Episode IX. However, John Boyega has revealed that the next time we see Finn back on the big screen, he'll be rocking a longer hairdo. As Boyega put it:

I can't wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise. The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.

Having recently finished promoting his latest movie, Pacific Rim Uprising, John Boyega is preparing for the Star Wars: Episode IX shoot in July. We knew that preparation would include bulking up, but as Boyega mentioned while speaking with Yahoo, he'll also be growing out his hair, meaning we're done with the short trim he had in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. This suggests that unlike The Last Jedi, which began only moments after The Force Awakens ended, a significant amount of time will be passed when Episode IX begins. It could just be a few months, although I'm hoping there will be at least a few years of distance between The Last Jedi and Episode IX, thus allowing Finn and the other main characters to have further developed.

At the end of The Last Jedi, most of The Resistance had been wiped out by The First Order, but thanks to Luke Skywalker distracting Kylo Ren, the remaining survivors were able to escape Crait aboard the Millennium Falcon. Finn nearly wasn't part of that group, as he tried to take out The First Order's giant cannon in a suicide run, only to be stopped by Rose Tico, who wisely pointed out that they won't win this war fighting what they hate, but saving what they love. Hopefully Finn will continue heeding these words as The Resistance slowly builds back its numbers and starts taking the fight to The First Order again. Whatever is in store for out heroes in Episode IX, the long hair will help with distinguishing the older and more experienced Finn from who we've watched over the last two main Star Wars movies.

Suspiria Director Says He Wants Movie To Be The 'Most Disturbing Experience You Can Have'

Audiences looking for a frightful time at the theater have already had a great year in 2018, with more testaments to the ongoing horror renaissance giving us plenty of reasons to be afraid of the dark. Fortunately, the back half of the year looks just as scary with The Nun, Halloween and Mandy still to come. However, the most terrifying film on the horizon may be the remake of Suspiria. The footage we've seen so far is deeply unsettling and that is no accident. Director Luca Guadagnino wants Suspiria to be truly disturbing, as he explained:

I hope that the movie comes across as a relentless experience that's going to go deep into your skin all the way down into your spine. I want the movie to perform as the most disturbing experience you can have. The movie is about being immersed in a world of turmoil and uncompromising darkness.

Wow, that's got to be just about the coolest thing you could ever hope for a horror director to say about his film. The R rating for Suspiria and the reasons for it already assured us that this movie would not be for the faint of heart, but what Luca Guadagnino is speaking to here is more than that. Beyond just being scary, the director is hoping that Suspiria will get under your skin and stay there as the most disturbing experience you can have. Those are quite lofty goals that really hype this movie as something that will mess with your head and haunt you long after you leave the theater.

Another comment Luca Guadagnino made to The Hollywood Reporter was that that he wants the movie to be a relentless experience. That tells me that there will be no reprieve, and few safe moments in the film to catch your breath. The disturbing nature of the film will keep you in a constant state of tension as you witness this dark tale. At least, that's Guadagnino's goal. And an ambitious one it is.

There is a stark difference between a movie just being scary and being both scary and disturbing. If there is one thing that has come across from the trailers for Suspiria so far it's that it will be very unsettling, creeping you out in an indefinable way that is hard to describe, but extremely effective. Something about the way its shot, the framing, the performances all contribute to this effect. This seems similar to Black Swan, ironically another movie about a dance company, which was unsettling throughout. Which is luckily the effect the trailers for Suspiria have had and presumably the film will also envelop you in.

New Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer Moves On After Avengers: Endgame

Were out of the Endgame now. The MCU is in a bold new place, where beloved characters have moved on, and its time for the universe as a whole to pick up the pieces. One of the first movies tasked with picking up the baton and running with it post-Avengers: Endgame is Jon Watts sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, and we now have a better idea why Peter Parker (Tom Holland) wants to take a break from superhero adventures in this movie. The second full trailer just arrived from Sony and Marvel Studios. Lets see whats up with the webslinger:

Well, that was chock full of shocking MCU surprises! From the jump, Tom Holland is warning people that this trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home will contain spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, and it really, really does. Peter is grieving the loss of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), with Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) telling Pete that Tony wouldnt have sacrificed himself unless he knew Spider-Man would carry on.

Our dude, however, just wants to go on vacation. Hes shelving the Iron Spider suit, and heading to Europe with his classmates. And he plans on wooing MJ (Zendaya) until it all starts to hit the fan.

The biggest reveal comes in the form of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Not that hes in the movie. We knew that much. But when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) introduces Peter Parker to his new ally, Quentin Beck, he clarifies that Beck is from Earth just, not our Earth. Fury explains that Thanos snap ripped a hole in the universe, and now theres access to Multiverses.

Multiverses are now alive and well in the MCU.

We can barely unpack all that this means for the MCU, so lets just focus on Spider-Man for the time being. Hes trying to move on from the events of Avengers: Endgame. But he also feels a strong pull to be the next Iron Man. Why cant he just be the first Spider-Man? Thats so much better, anyway.

Theres also an important reveal later in the trailer, as MJ basically tells Peter that she knows that he is Spider-Man. This is the second important person in Peters life to decipher this secret (after Marisa Tomeis Aunt May), which means that for a superhero, Spidey is really shit at keeping secrets.

Then again, there is a lot of misdirect at play in these trailers. The Nick Fury line about it being nice to meet you has been changed since, obviously, they met at Tonys funeral. And as much as people want to see Mysterio as an ally, I still subscribe to the notion that its a bait-and-switch, and hes really a bad guy who is responsible for the Elementals that are attacking the worlds top cities.

Well find out for sure when Spider-Man: Far From Home opens in theaters on July 2!
