Barry Jenkins Moonlight Follow Up, If Beale Street Could Talk, Drops Beautiful Trailer

It's been just under two years since director Barry Jenkins' acclaimed drama Moonlight was released. While the incredibly poignant Best Picture winner still lingers heavily on movie fans' minds, it will soon be time to see Jenkins next work, If Beale Street Could Talk. The new film based on the 1974 James Baldwin novel of the same name is coming to theaters this November, just in time for awards season. If Beale Street Could Talk tells a compelling story of young couple Fonny and Tish who fall in love on the streets of Harlem in the 70's. They're soon torn apart when Fonny is falsely accused of raping a woman and imprisoned. When Tish finds out she is pregnant, her family and lawyer work to find the evidence to prove Fonny is innocent before their baby is born. Check out this emotional first trailer, but don't be surprised if Jenkins' pristine cinematic shots give you chills.

The trailer opens with Tish hesitantly trying to speak with her mother, played by the remarkable Regina King. Warm introductions to the characters and a distinct setting follow, as Fonny and Tish take romantic strolls down streets and smile at one another. The cuts are alluring to the eye, while vaguely introducing the film's plot. A soundbite from author James Baldwin plays in the background, as the teaser grows more intense with each cut. Roaring arguments between Tish and her family intensify the trailer, and the uneasy sounds of subway rails screech as Fonny (Stephan James) runs to the entrance, calling out. Audiences will be quickly invested in the relationship between Fonny and Tish, as they power through the miserable circumstances they are faced with in the film.

Cinephiles may remember Stephan James in the Jesse Owens biopic Race, or his role in Selma. If Beale Street Could Talk will mark the film debut of KiKi Layne, who also plays Tish. The cast's performances look incredible, and could possibly follow up the award-winning performances in Moonlight.

James Baldwin's narration in the trailer is especially memorable as it focuses on the struggle to find "your role in this country, and what your future is in it." Baldwin was the subject of the recent documentary I Am Not Your Negro, an account of civil right activists and his close friends Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evers. The author's works have focused heavily on the black experience and race relations in America, and If Beale Street Could Talk won't be an exception. In the novel, Fonny gets sent to jail due to a racist policeman's accusations, which is briefly introduced in a short close-up shot in the trailer.

The upcoming film will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and come to theaters on November 30th.

What It Was Like Filming Outlaw Kings Muddy, Bloody Battle Sequences

We've seen many different kinds of war movies set throughout all eras of society, but few get as sincerely chaotic as David Mackenzie's upcoming Outlaw King. Not only is it a film featuring the execution of guerilla tactics, but the cinematography is specifically designed to highlight the insanity that is battle. It's a standout element of production, and something I got to talk about with the director and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine:

Last month I joined members of the press flying out to Edinburgh, Scotland, where I sat down with the Outlaw King director and cast to talk about the new movie. It was in both my interviews with David Mackenzie and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine that the subject of the chaotic battle scenes came up, and they explained how it was all brought to life.

Speaking from the actors perspective, Aaron Taylor-Johnson admitted that it was a taxing experience to create the mayhem-filled sequences of Outlaw King -- which includes a fire-filled midnight ambush, and a fight set in what's basically a giant mud pit. Tough as it was, though, it was all part of the director's vision, and that's what they signed up for. Said Taylor-Johnson,

No, it was pretty chaotic, and relentless, and grueling. And I think that's again, Mackenzie's way of filmmaking. He likes to capture that essence, and therefore creates that kind of environment where it is authentic and real and chaotic.

When I spoke with David Mackenzie later in the day, he confirmed that his personal filmmaking style isn't one that is all about structure. While making the battle sequences he had multiple cameras running, and apparently never explicitly explained to his performers what was being captured -- instead letting them just exist in the atmosphere:

Well, as the director, I like things to be very loose. I liked my actors to improvise a bit. I like to, you know, not have a very big difference between when we're on and when we're off, not really to know, and for everyone to inhabit the reality of the environment in particular location.

Outlaw King is the second collaboration between David Mackenzie and Chris Pine after their work on the Oscar-nominated Hell Or High Water. This time around Pine is playing Robert The Bruce, a noble Earl who picked up the revolutionary torch left by William Wallace in 14th century Scotland. In the name of freedom, and not wanting to live under the boot heel of England's King Edward I (Stephen Dillane), Robert led his small resistance group (including Aaron Taylor-Johnson's James Douglas, Lord of Douglas) in a battle against tyranny, waging a bloody war and being declared by his followers as the Outlaw King.

The film makes you feel like you are on the battlefield right alongside Robert The Bruce and his men, and a great deal of credit goes to the cinematographer -- who has some experience with capturing reality. As Aaron Taylor Johnson explained, it was shot by Barry Ackroyd, who not only has a background in documentaries, but also visceral thrillers like The Hurt Locker and United 93.

Barry Ackroyd shot this, and his whole background is documentary filmmaking. So it felt like we were a pack of wild animals, and it was capture what you can and there were moments of realism.

As David Mackenzie explained, there was simultaneously every effort made to make sure the set of Outlaw King was as safe as possible, including not only the stunt work, but also all of the performing with the horses. At the same time though, if you watch the film and feel like you're watching madness unfold, then that means Mackenzie accomplished his mission.

Following its premiere earlier this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, Outlaw King will soon be arriving for consumption -- but it won't be at your local cineplex. Instead, Netflix subscribers will find it available to stream this Friday, November 9th. Some minor spoilers for Bohemian Rhapsody can be found in this article. They probably won't take away from your enjoyment of the movie, but just in case!

We've heard about Rami Malek putting in fake teeth to approximate Freddie Mercury's own mouth. We've heard about his tight wardrobe. We've heard about singing lessons and piano lessons and even movement lessons. Still, there was one thing Rami Malek was really unprepared for when it came to playing Freddie Mercury on the big screen: playing piano upside down. Per Malek:

Of all things that I had to do in this film, it was like, it was gonna be so difficult enough just playing Freddie Mercury, then I flipped to Page 16 and it says in the scene description, 'Freddie plays piano upside down.' And I thought,' Oh god.'

Speaking on the red carpet during E! Live From The Red Carpet ahead of the 2019 Golden Globes, Rami Malek revealed during the telecast that he had a brief moment of panic when he first started reading the script for Bohemian Rhapsody. Right there on the page he was told not only was he going to have to learn to play piano, he was going to have to learn to do it upside down in an approximation of Freddie Mercury's unusual talents.

Previously Rami Malek actually told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that he was legitimately scared of learning to play piano when he was growing up, so this was an even bigger challenge for the actor than it might have been for someone else. Just learning to play the piano was a challenge for Malek, who called the instrument "a foreign thing" when on the late night TV show. Learning to play it upside down was a whole level further into crazy town.

If you've seen Bohemian Rhapsody, you should know the upside-down piano scene comes when Freddie Mercury is figuring out how he wants the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" to sound. In real life, Freddie Mercury was double-jointed and his hands could bend back to accommodate the piano that he was using as a headboard.

The story of Freddie Mercury playing in bed made its way into Bohemian Rhapsody and the rest is history. Or at least some approximation of it.

Obviously, some of the timelines in Bohemian Rhapsody have been shuffled. In addition, so facts have been changed to make a more compelling story. The movie itself has clearly been a crowd pleaser, going on to make over $743 million in theaters so far. Last night, it actually won the award for Best Drama at the Golden Globes, surprising many who thought other movies like A Star Is Born (or others) would take the big prize.

We'll have to wait and see if it continues this upward trajectory as awards season wears on and other award nominees, including the coveted Academy Awards, are announced. In the meantime, you can take a look at the full list of Golden Globes winners.

Ever since the trailer debuted a few months back, Mandy has been one of the most intriguing post-summer movies. The action horror film stars Nicolas Cage, giving a trademark crazy performance in a phantasmagorical revenge story. Nicolas Cage is earning positive notices for his performance in the low-budget flick, leading to thoughts that there is more he could do in the low-budget horror space-- perhaps with a company like Blumhouse. Well, Nicolas Cage agrees. He likes what Blumhouse is doing and he'd be up for starring in a Blumhouse movie, as he said:

[Jason Blum's] certainly touched a nerve, and he's having great success. I work with anyone who is enthusiastic and has an understanding of what they'd like to do with whatever my instrument can offer them. I certainly would not hesitate. I think what he's doing is a great concept and the results back that up.

Nicolas Cage sounds like he is very much open to starring in a movie for Jason Blum, whatever it may be. He seems to be very aware of the success Blumhouse is having with low-budget horror, and his confidence in that success and Jason Blum's enthusiasm and vision is why he wouldn't hesitate to star in a Blumhouse production. His comments to Forbes also give you a good idea of how Nicolas Cage views his profession as an actor. He sees himself as an instrument for the filmmaker to use as he or she sees fit and if Jason Blum can use Nicolas Cage in something, he is more than willing to oblige.

Wanting to star in a Blumhouse movie and Blumhouse actually wanting you to are two different things, so Nicolas Cage's desire to work with Blumhouse does not guarantee it'll happen. Fortunately, this fandom goes both ways, and Blumhouse Productions head Jason Blum is excited at the idea of working with Nicolas Cage. And he will seemingly look for an opportunity to do so, as he explained:

While speaking to Forbes, you can tell how psyched Jason Blum is to know that Nicolas Cage is a fan of what he and his company. Blum seems to already be brainstorming story ideas, and what kind of role he could use the Oscar winner for. Jason Blum mentioned something of a more dramatic role for Nicolas Cage, but he is a versatile actor willing to do whatever is asked. So whether it be something serious or something that calls for a crazy Nicolas Cage performance, the actor should have the experience.

Now all that needs to happen is for these two to set a lunch and get the ball rolling on some story ideas. There are no guarantees, but I'd guess Nicolas Cage will show up in a Blumhouse movie sooner or later. Blumhouse has plenty in the works at the moment. This fall sees the release of the Halloween reboot, and Jason Blum also would love to reboot the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchises.
