The Daredevil Movies Director Is Still Proud Of It

Today the cinema landscape is absolutely littered with superhero movies. What's even more amazing, however, is that a lot of them are actually really good. There was a time when comic book movies rarely got the attention of serious movie fans or critics. Many of the films just weren't viewed as being all that good, even by serious fans of the comics. One of the movies that tends to get a lot of criticism is 2003's Daredevil starring Ben Affleck. While a lot of people don't love it, director Mark Steven Johnson will still come to its defense, as he says the movie tried a lot of things that you had never seen in those sorts of films, and may never see again. According to Johnson...

We tried some things, which I am proud of. I do like the look of Daredevil very much. We hadn't seen a superhero come home covered in scars, and chewing on pain pills, and it was kind of grim. You're not going to get that right now from a Disney-owned Marvel character. You're just not going to see that, and maybe there's a reason. But I found that very interesting. It was something you hadn't seen.

Daredevil was far from the worst comic book movie ever made, and it made a decent amount money at the box office, enough to spawn the spin-off Elektra, but with the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe doing so well, it certainly looks weak by comparison.

Of course, Mark Steven Johnson tells comicbook.com that his movie has things you won't see in the current MCU. Matt Murdock wasn't an invulnerable hero, something that was made clear by the scars and the taking of pain pills. He certainly has a point that these are elements that we're unlikely to see in the modern MCU.

While we likely won't see anybody popping pills on the big screen of the MCU, it doesn't mean that sort of thing is entirely off the table. Daredevil made his return to the screen via the Marvel/Netflix series which is without question, a much darker corner of the MCU. It's much more bloody and violent, involves a lot more alcohol, drugs, and sex than what we get on the big screen. If anything it's an even darker take than the 2003 movie.

While the theatrical run of Daredevil did not review well, the film did see a director's cut released on DVD which has been praised in much greater numbers than the original version, indicating that the director may have been on to something after all.

Daredevil probably should be praised for the risks that it takes. Few movies are absolutely perfect or absolutely terrible, and taking a risk and missing the mark is largely better than taking no risks at all.

Who knows what sort of Daredevil we'll see in the future. The Netflix series has been officially canceled so it will reportedly be a couple of years at least before we could see the character pop up on the big or small screen.

Working With Wolves Was An Extreme Challenge In The Making Of Hold The Dark

While the old Hollywood axiom about not working with children or animals is about the potential for upstaging, there's good reason why it's a phrase often misinterpreted to be about the difficulty of working conditions. Neither of the aforementioned are well known for being super cooperative exactly when they need to be, and in the case of the latter situations are made even more difficult when the creatures are wild. A perfect example of this can be found in the story of the making of Hold The Dark, the new thriller from director Jeremy Saulnier. The film has Alaskan wolves playing a key part in the plot, and it was an element the filmmakers underestimated, starting with what screenwriter Macon Blair described to me as a "far too specific" script:

Very specific. 'The wolf stops, turns its head a quarter degree, gives an eye to the camera.' It was very, very specific, and there were a lot of sequences where I don't know what... I do know what I was thinking. I was thinking that it wasn't going to be my problem! So yeah, 'I'm going to give them some really complicated stuff to do with, with very precise directions.' And of course they're wild animals. They will do exactly whatever they want.

Hold The Dark held its American premiere at Fantastic Fest earlier this month in Austin, Texas, and the day after the screening I had the pleasure of sitting down with both Jeremy Saunier and Macon Blair to talk about their latest collaboration (they've now worked together on all four of Saulnier's feature directorial efforts, the previous three being Murder Party, Blue Ruin, and Green Room). I brought up the subject of working with the animals on the movie, going in assuming that it wasn't the easiest part of production, and the filmmakers told me all about not only the difficulty of working with wolves, but also why it was so important.

Macon Blair noted that while there was absolutely no way that the production could get the wolves to do exactly what he wrote into his screenplay, he was immensely impressed with what Jeremy Saulnier and his editor, Julia Bloch, were able to piece together. He openly described some of what he wrote for the animals as "not film-able," but still his director and the film's editor were able to get the footage that they needed to construct competent sequences.

Some of you may be questioning at this point why the Hold The Dark production wouldn't just patch things up with CGI, but that was actually something Jeremy Saulnier specifically wanted to avoid. While he had been somewhat convinced by other films that there was more that could be done with trained wolves, he didn't want to use the artifice of visual effects in a movie that is as grounded in reality as it is, even with its more supernatural elements. Explained the director,

The wolves, though, when Macon sort of choreographed the sequence with the semicircle of wolves approaching - what we see in movies - we thought they could do that. But most of the wolves you see, either they run through frame, or they're 3D CG models, and that's what we definitely didn't want to do, is dip into that world where we were doing something very artificial and contrived. Because the movie needed to be very grounded and unimpeachable as far as, 'Is this real or not?' Because we're asking people to take a big leap and it has mystical elements and all that.

Breaking it down, Jeremy Saulnier explained that there was little direction that could be offered for the wolves beyond the occasional introduction of a free meal:

The animals, you know, you throw a raw chicken at the wolves and they'll eat it, and they'll stare for a bit, but they do not behave properly. So it was an exercise in filmmaking, how do we translate Macon's script, get all the impact of that scene, but totally bend to the will of the wild animals and never allow ourselves to sort of lean back on any sort of artificial techniques.

Obviously all of this sounds like a sincere creative challenge, but one bit of positive news for Hold The Dark was that not all of the animal wrangling required serious improvisation. One of the key moments early in the movie sees Jeffrey Wright's character, Russell Core, impeded on the path to his destination by a large bison in the middle of the road, and Saulnier explained that there was really no issue at all with those creatures:

The bison behave quite well. They don't tend to be too skittish and bounce around.

There was a lot of hard work that went into the making of Hold The Dark, and audiences can now experience for themselves. The film, which co-stars Riley Keough, Alexander Skarsgard, and James Badge Dale, is now available for all Netflix subscribers on their streaming platform.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in flux right now, as the universe shattering events of Avengers: Infinity War has shocked fans and cinephiles alike. Josh Brolin's Thanos surprised everyone by actually succeeding, and acquiring all of the Infinity Stones. This resulted in half of the galaxy being wiped out instantly, including a ton of beloved MCU heroes. It's unclear how the narrative will continue in the wake of this loss, and how the remaining Avengers will manage to turn it around. One hero who won't be around to help is Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter, who died during the events of Captain America: Civil War. But Atwell has an idea for how Peggy would handle the situation: by attempting to actually empathize with the big purple guy.

You know how with Thanos you can see this tormented man working through his own kind of moral compass. There's like this sensitivity about him that's required when he's got to kill his own daughter. I think there must be an Achilles' heel in there somewhere. There must be some sort of way there to disarm him that's not physical. I think she's maybe just give him a therapy session. I think she would help him celebrate his differences. I think she would give him a little red lipstick and say that it works wonders for me when I'm having a bad day.

While Marvel heroes like Gamora and Thor may have attacked first and asked questions later, Hayley Atwell has found another approach to try and save the galaxy as we know it. Instead, she thinks Pegy Carter would take the more personal touch, and meet him eye to eye. At least, as much as you can with a giant, armored, superpowered villain.

Hayley Atwell's comments come from her recent appearance at ACE Comic-Con. Atwell did a panel about her tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes her own TV show, an arc on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and her myriad silver screen appearances. Peggy is a fan favorite, with the community seemingly always asking for Agent Carter to get new life after its cancellation. Peggy has brains, heart, and badassery, which is why she might have been helpful when Thanos came knocking. Unfortunately she had recently passed away, and therefore it was up to the rest of Marvel's heroes. They just didn't win.

Thanos' finger snap has broad ramifications for the greater MCU, as its unclear which characters have vanished into dust, and which ones are still alive and well on earth. This includes Peggy Carter's niece Sharon aka Agent 13. Sharon had a major arc in both The Winter Soldier and Civil War, but was noticeably absent in Infinity War. We'll just have to wait and see if the Carter bloodline continued when Avengers 4 arrives.
