Zack Snyder Says Goodbye To Ben Afflecks Batman In Emotional Post

The DC live-action universe has had a wild run theaters so far, full of both peaks and valleys. While the shared universe is still celebrating the massive success of James Wan's Aquaman, there have been a few missteps during its early stages, including Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. And there's one common thread in those three flicks: Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne/ Batman. While audiences responded to the jaded and experienced version of the Dark Knight, the filmmaker has officially left his role and hung up the cowl and cape for good.

Ben Affleck's departure has a variety of affects on the DC Universe, with director Matt Reeves having to recast the role for his upcoming solo flick The Batman. Zack Snyder brought Affleck's Batman to audiences with Batman v Superman, and recently posted a poetic tribute to his collaboration with the Oscar winner, saying:

There was a time above.. A time before there were perfect things diamond absolutes. But things fall.. Things on earth. And what falls is fallen. In the dream, it took me to the light. A beautiful lie, Best Batman ever. Thank you my friend for blessing me with that fucking glorious chin and an amazing heart.

Both emotional and funny, Zack Snyder seems to have a gamut of emotions regarding Ben Affleck's departure from Batman. He had quite a partnership with Affleck for BvS and Justice League, bringing a version of Bruce Wayne that was far more jaded, experienced, and emotionally damaged than the ones in the Dark Knight trilogy or Joel Schumacher flicks. As such, he seems bummed to see the character retired.

Zack Snyder's comments on Vero (via Reddit) are sure to elicit a variety of reactions from moviegoers out there. The Watchmen director's contributions to the DCEU helped to jump start an entire cinematic universe, although not all of his movies have been a success for Warner Bros. The fandom took umbrage with the creative choices in Batman v Superman, especially as Ben Affleck's Batman killed criminals without care. And after Snyder departed Justice League due to a family emergency, Joss Whedon stepped in, with the final cut being somewhat of a Frankenstein film.

But despite the missteps of the DC Universe, Ben Affleck's performance as Batman was widely considered a strong point of those early films. The actor brought a hulking physical presence to the role, and moviegoers could see the physical and emotional scars from his years of vigilante work. Unfortunately, the bad press and viral memes may have inspired Affleck to leave Bats behind, and Matt Reeves will recast for his developing movie The Batman.

While Zack Snyder doesn't have any DC movies on his schedule, he was credited as an executive producer on Aquaman. So perhaps his vision for the DCEU will still factor into future installments.

The Insane Amount Saudi Arabia Movie Tickets Could Cost

How much would you be willing to pay for a ticket to see an eagerly anticipated movie? $10? $15? $20? What if you hadn't seen a movie in a theater in decades, possibly ever, or had to leave your country to do so? Such is the situation now in Saudi Arabia where the government is now allowing public cinemas after a 35-year ban. AMC is the first exhibitor to get a license in the Middle Eastern country, with tickets expected to run a lofty $20 a pop. However, given the demand after such a drought, word on the street is the ticket prices could rise to between $30 and an eye-watering $35 each.

The reason for such absurdly high prices? Why supply and demand, of course. Speaking at CinemaCon (via Variety) on Monday, AMC chief Adam Aron said that the price is too low. The level of demand from an audience that hasn't enjoyed a theatrical experience in its country in a generation makes price not an issue. Whereas here such prices would result in empty theaters, in Saudi Arabia the demand is so high that there will be more than enough people willing to pay $30+ per ticket. This rapidly inflating ticket price isn't all AMC looking to turn a tidy profit either. There is a high sales tax factoring in as well as an additional 25% sales tax that the Saudi Arabian government is levying on entertainment products.

This is just the beginning, too, as Saudi Arabia is being viewed as a major potential market by the movie industry. A huge 70% of the country's 32 million people are under 30, causing analysts to predict that opening this market could result in Saudi Arabia being one of the top-ten movie markets in a matter of years. Things are moving fast, but there is still a long way to go. Saudi Arabia doesn't have the existing infrastructure, so everything is being done from scratch, with theaters being built and the country still working on a ratings system, as well as a censorship process.

The first public cinema began test screenings on April 18th at an invitation only event in Riyadh. Black Panther was the debut film at the AMC theater. The showing also broke cultural ground by allowing men and women to sit together. This is part of broader reforms taking place in the traditionally conservative country as it aims to diversify economically and institute slightly more liberal policies like allowing women to drive. AMC plans to open 40 cinemas in 15 Saudi cities over the next five years, and there are expected to be 350 theaters in the country by 2030. Soon, Saudi audiences will be able to enjoy the world's most famous movie star, Dwayne Johnson, on the big screen as Rampage has been given a release date while Avengers: Infinity War is currently being shown to censors.

Hopefully, as more theater open up in the country and cinemas become less rare, prices will come back down to a reasonable level. But considering that up until recently if you wanted to see a movie in theaters, you'd have to leave the country, $35 isn't the worst thing in the world. Even though attendance is down here in the U.S., ticket prices rose to an all-time high last year of $8.97, not factoring in premium formats or 3D. So next time you have to pony up for a movie ticket, remember it could be much, much more expensive.

The Spider-Man Villain Ryan Coogler Wanted To Use In Black Panther

While many super villains in comic books are primarily associated with one superhero, that doesn't mean they can't occasionally fight around, to quote Will Arnett's Batman. Take Kraven the Hunter, who was introduced in 1964's The Amazing Spider-Man #15. His main beef has been with the Web-Slinger, but one of the other heroes he's tangled with is Black Panther. As a result, when director/co-writer Ryan Coogler was developing the Black Panther movie, he asked if he could incorporate Kraven into the story, only to have his request refused. Coogler explained:

Being a Marvel fan, you want to grab all the characters. You realise there's contractual things. You don't have that character. There was a Christopher Priest run that was pretty heavy, there's a big scene where Panther's fighting Kraven, Kraven the Hunter. I've always loved Kraven the Hunter in almost every iteration. So there was a moment -- 'Can I grab Kraven?' -- and they were 'Nah, you don't have Kraven.' He was one where I thought 'Oh, man.' But I don't even know if he would have worked in the movie we ended up with, this was the early days.

Ryan Coogler was confirmed to be co-writing and directing Black Panther in January 2016, nearly a full year after Marvel and Sony decided to partner together with Spider-Man on film, and four months before Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man would debut in Captain America: Civil War. So even though Kraven the Hunter still technically belongs at Sony with the other Spider-Man characters, it's possible that an arrangement could have been worked out to have T'Challa and Kraven go mano a mano on the big screen, calling back to their clash in the Christopher Priest Black Panther comic book run. However, as Coogler recalled to Yahoo, Marvel wouldn't let him use the character, which led to him using established Black Panther foes like Erik Killmonger and Ulysses Klaue (known as Klaw in the comics).

Kraven the Hunter is one of the Spider-Man villains that hasn't been adapted for film yet, though when the Amazing Spider-Man series was still running, the plan was for him to be part of the Sinister Six. Last year, it was reported that Kraven and fellow Spidey baddie Mysterio are being considered for standalone spinoffs, like Venom and Silver & Black. Even if a Kraven-centric project doesn't materialize, we can't discount that Kraven could be used as an antagonist in a future Spider-Man movie. However, given that Black Panther has a relatively small rogues gallery, if Black Panther 2 is greenlit (and given the early critical reception and ticket pre-sales, there's a good chance that will happen), perhaps Marvel and Sony would be willing to play ball this time around and relocate Kraven to Wakanda for the sequel.

Black Panther arrives in theaters next Friday, February 16, and T'Challa will return alongside Spider-Man and the MCU's other major heroes for Avengers: Infinity War on May 4 and Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.
