The Secret Life Of Pets 2: Animated Dogs And Cats Beat Out Dark Phoenix During Slow Weekend

We've been on a bit of a blockbuster high the last few weeks, particularly thanks to the insane performance by Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Endgame - which is getting closer everyday towards becoming the biggest movie of all time. Unfortunately, though, that particular film fever is coming down now, and helped us once again acknowledge something we've now recognized for months: 2019 is really disappointing at the box office. This weekend is a perfect example, as what should have been an absolutely massive three days - featuring the launch of both a new X-Men movie and Illumination Entertainment title - we instead just got... blah.

The films released by Ilumination Entertainment have never really received the acclaim of either Pixar or Walt Disney Animation Studios titles, but what they have been known for is making crazy money at the box office. It started with the successful launch of the Despicable Me franchise back in 2010, and the train failed to slow down since, with their weakest performer to date being 2011's Hop, which still managed to make nine figures by the end of its theatrical run. This created a lot of expectations for The Secret Life Of Pets 2, but the finished product has underwhelmed in its launch.

The first movie in this series still remains the highest grossing Illumination Entertainment title domestically - having made $368.4 million in North America. But it doesn't look like The Secret Life Of Pets 2 is going to be able to come anywhere close to matching that success. Despite being released in 200 more theaters during its opening weekend, the sequel made less than half of what its predecessor did in July 2016. At that time it was a big surprise hit, crushing its direct competition and forcing Andrew Stanton's Finding Dory from the first place position it had owned in its first three weeks. Hell, the money made by the follow-up doesn't even equal what The Secret Life Of Pets made in its second week when it was going up again Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.

It was suggest by some prognosticators that The Secret Life Of Pets 2 could make north of $60 million, but it came up shockingly short. It may wind up getting some positive word of mouth from audiences, as it managed to get an "A-" CinemaScore grade, but still the future doesn't look incredibly bright for the animated would-be hit. There are some massive movies coming up in the next few weeks, with the greatest competition surely set to come from Josh Cooley's Toy Story 4 - which will likely be stealing a lot of Illumination's audience when their film goes out swinging for its third weekend.

Of course, as sour as that whole mess is, the situation for Dark Phoenix is far bleaker. This has been a film in trouble for quite a while now, as we have seen it go through many delays, and there has been a great deal of chatter about behind the scenes changes. As a result, expectations weren't too high for this release - despite it being the final chapter in the main X-Men series - but even still it managed to disappoint. This is the weakest opening ever for a film in the Marvel Mutant franchise... and not by a small amount, either. Previously it was James Mangold's The Wolverine that had the worst three day start, but even that film managed to make north of $50 million.

The situation is modestly similar to what happened to Josh Trank's Fantastic Four back in 2015 - also a much-delayed Fox Marvel movie that also happened to have a script written by Simon Kinberg. Opening in August, Fantastic Four made just $25.7 million in its opening frame - which isn't a great deal better than the $33 million showing by Dark Phoenix. International numbers should ultimately help, as the latest release has already made $107 million from overseas, but it's doubtful that it will be called anything close to a "massive success" by the time it exits theaters.

How could things get more depressing? Well, let's talk about Michael Dougherty's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters - which took the top spot last week with an underwhelming $49 million. This is another feature analysts were hoping would buoy the box office numbers of early 2019, but now it looks like that's definitely not going to happen. Not only did the film fall from first to fourth place, it also saw its numbers drop off a stunning 67.5 percent - which is really awful considering studios typically hope for a falloff of only 50 percent or so. Thanks to money from foreign territories it's going to be fine at the end of the day, as its global total is already nearing $300 million, so Warner Bros. doesn't have to sweat too much about Adam Wingard's upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, which has already wrapped production in anticipation of being released next year.

To close out with a bit of a silver lining for these dark clouds, at the very least Guy Ritchie's Aladdin is doing some solid business - able to hold on to third place in its third week. Not only has it been doing better than Disney expectations, it's already made twice as much as Tim Burton's Dumbo made earlier this year (though its worth noting that the baby elephant movie is still playing in 112 theaters nationwide). Aladdin has surpassed $600 million at the international box office, and is now the fourth biggest release of 2019, behind only Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, and the Chinese film The Wandering Earth.

Coming up on Friday we will get to see a showdown between more sequels - and hopefully the results will be at least a little better that what's been detailed here. Men In Black International and Shaft are going head-to-head, so be sure tune in next Sunday to see how everything shakes out.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right The Grinch Ticket

Holiday time is drawing so near, and surely enough a new Grinch is here! For Christmas cheer a little to early, there's no movie better than this one, green and surly. Ok, so we're not going to rhyme this entire article, but how can you not throw out a verse or two in tribute to Dr. Seuss' iconic miser of merriment? Though, with a new animated version of this holiday homewrecker in theaters, we have to ask ourselves, should The Grinch steal our 3D money, or would it be better served buying a nice roast beast for a Whoville level feast?

Fear not, as To 3D Or Not To 3D is here to show you the way! We won't be Grinching on the film's actual content - you can head over to our official review to see how we felt about the third film interpretation of this legendary story - but for now it's time to pack up the sleigh, and fly into action, as The Grinch's 3D will be measured for third dimensional satisfaction!

An animated film with as many sight gags and vistas as The Grinch practically screams for the 3D treatment. Animation seems to be the last stand when it comes to third dimensional enhancements, as it's almost always used for this sort of film. When done right, the 3D effect can turn an animated film into a whole other beast entirely, as it's somewhat easier to generate effective thrills when your film is entirely computer generated.

Everything The Grinch has to offer is laid out in pretty detailed fashion. The care and time that went into this film's conversion is easy to see, as there's a lot of visual treats for your eye to consume in all three dimensions. With only a bit of dimness in the picture's brightness factor being the main shortcoming, the rest of the film's 3D polish is pretty spectacular.

We're truly lucky to have The Grinch and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in our 3D theaters at the moment. Much like the Wizarding World's latest adventure, The Grinch has some exciting material that springs forth towards the audience. Both The Grinch's misadventures in planning and actually stealing Christmas make for a lot of objects flying towards the audience, with the various devices dreamed up by Seussian loyalists also lending some visual panache to the overall product. Even the closing credits get in on the action, with the first couple of minutes containing some cute bits that stand out.

The material popping out of the screen duringThe Grinch is equally matched by their counterparts on the other side of the window. Characters and their environments are separated and well drawn when in the scope of the picture. Even more impressive is the fact that the backgrounds on display have a fantastic field of depth to them as well, with layers of objects being depicted far into the background.

For a film as gorgeously colored as The Grinch, the prospect of 3D is a bit scary. The reason for that is because between putting the typical 3D glasses on, and the condition/upkeep your local theater visits upon their projectors used for 3D showings, your dimness of picture may vary. In the presentation of The Grinch that was viewed, the picture wasn't terribly dimmed, and still totally visible. However, there was an undeniably grey wash over the image, which slightly dials the pigments on display down a notch.

While watching a 3D movie, there's always the temptation to lift up your glasses and see the picture in its natural form. If you were to do that, you'd see a varying degree of blur that is usually indicative of how much the picture has been manipulated to create a 3D image. In the case of The Grinch, there's a fantastic amount of blur that occupies quite a bit of the screen. Even in close-up shots, you can see a mixture of extreme and subtle blur, allowing for shots such as The Grinch looking down on Whoville to really stand out on both sides of the glasses.

For all of the action and slapstick comedy that The Grinch has to offer, there's a chance that some of the action will get quite dicey in the 3D shuffle. There are definitely some sequences that do play around with your eyes a little, as some of the action is a little too fast for the third dimensional enhancements to stay solid. But for the most part, the visuals won't kill your eyes too much.

The Grinch is a pretty beautiful film to behold, and the 3D conversion is pretty solid as well. With only a couple fast paced sequences wonking out the visual quality, and the brightness levels being a bit of an issue, it's 3D done exceedingly well. If you know a theater that's pretty good with keeping its projectors nice and bright, you should take your family to see this Christmas caper's 3D version.

Muschietti is back at the helm, and set to play the adult versions of The Losers Club are Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, James Ransone, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, and Andy Bean.Release Date: September 6, 2019

Doctor SleepStatus: In Pre-ProductionWhile it's notoriously not one of Stephen King's favorites, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is in most eyes a remarkable masterpiece of psychological terror. That in mind, any follow-up story is certainly going to be the subject of intense scrutiny, but that's just something that Doctor Sleep will have to go through. The book, which was King's 50th novel, follows up with adult Danny Torrence, who has grown up to be an angry alcoholic like his father, and sees the continued development of his psychic abilities with a young girl named Abra, who has similar gifts. Akiva Goldsman, who has some experience with King adaptations having worked on Nicolaj Arcel's The Dark Tower, was hired to pen the adaptation in Spring 2016, but since then Mike Flanagan - who has his own bit of King history with Gerald's Game - has come aboard as director and is doing his own draft. Ewan McGregor is attached to star as Danny, while the rest of the cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, Chelsea Talmadge, Zahn McClarnon, and Alex Essoe.Release Date: November 8, 2019

The StandStatus: In DevelopmentLike IT, The Stand became a mini-series when it was first adapted back in the 1990s -- once again the source material's length being considered a problem for the film world. Challenges are being damned, however, as Warner Bros. is moving forward with a feature version of the story, which is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the few survivors of a deadly pandemic find themselves splitting into two factions, following the leadership of two very different individuals. While the project has been delayed a few times, the movie is being written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars, New Mutants).

The TalismanStatus: AnnouncedJosh Boone is very clearly a Stephen King fan, as he is not only developing a big screen version of The Stand, but also one of the most recent adaptations that has started to see its gears turning. Announced in mid-October 2017, the writer/director is now working on a take on The Talisman, based on the 1984 book that King co-wrote with Peter Straub. The story centers on 12-year-old Jack Sawyer, whose mother continually keeps moving him all around the country. The reason for this is because she's dying, and in order to save her Jack must go on an adventure in the "Territories" -- a parallel reality where he can find the mystical talisman that will let his mom survive.

RevivalStatus: In DevelopmentNow it's time to discuss the third Stephen King adaptation that Josh Boone is currently cooking up (it makes you wonder how many he'll actually make, but, then again, Frank Darabont made that many). Going back a couple years, Boone has been working on a film version of Revival, with King's 2014 novel serving as source material. Said to have Russell Crowe attached to star the film looks at the story of Charles Jacobs, a charismatic preacher in a small New England town who goes through a crisis of faith following the death of his wife and child, and begins supernatural experiments with electricity as a means of faith healing.

FirestarterStatus: In DevelopmentBlumhouse Productions has become one of the biggest names in horror in recent years, and they are ready to get into the world of Stephen King adaptations with a remake of Firestarter. In the works since Spring 2017, the movie will once again tell the story of a young married couple who have to go on the run to protect their pyrokinetic daughter from a government agency known as The Shop. The original, directed by Mark L. Lester back in 1984, famously stars a young Drew Barrymore, so the new version will have a hill to climb casting that role. Scott Teems, who wrote and directed episodes of the series Rectify, is taking care of the script, while Fatih Akin (In the Fade) is handling directing duties.

Suffer The Little ChildrenStatus: AnnouncedStephen King clearly has a few of his epics in the works, but Suffer The Little Children is based on one of his shorts from Nightmares & Dreamscapes. Changed a bit to fit feature length, the story will follow Miss Emily Sidley, a divorced first grade teacher. She begins to notice that her students are acting a bit strange, and eventually it's revealed that they are not really her students at all, but instead alien creatures that are inhabiting their bodies. Per a September 2017 project announcement, the movie is being made by writer/director Sean Carter.

Drunken FireworksStatus: In DevelopmentDrunken Fireworks is a unique short story in Stephen King's repertoire, if not just because it actually debuted first as an audiobook. It's been published since, in The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, but now it's ready to make another medium change. Set to star and possibly be directed by James Franco, the story is about two neighbors in Maine separated by a lake, but connected by a desire for competition. Each year during the Fourth of July, they both strive to put on the most incredible fireworks display possible. The adaptation was first announced in June 2016.

HeartsStatus: In DevelopmentIn 2001, director Scott Hicks made the Stephen King adaptation Hearts in Atlantis, which is actually based on two of his stories which are not called "Hearts in Atlantis," the King-written short/novella collection that also shares that title. Now, however, that actual story from the book is being made into a film. British director Johannes Roberts signed on to direct the movie in September 2016, which will follow a group of college Freshman during the Vietnam War who find themselves getting completely addicted to the card game Hearts -- only to find it start to totally destroy their lives.

Rose MadderStatus: In DevelopmentDomestic violence is understandably a common element in a lot of Stephen King's work, and in his 1995 novel Rose Madder it is put front and center. An abused woman named Rose realizes that she can't continue her life with her husband, and makes the decision to run away. This is an action fraught with consequences, the biggest being the fact that her vindictive husband chases after her, but it also presents many new opportunities, as well as a strange discovery of what seems to be a magical painting. The film adaptation of this book was announced in Summer 2017, with The Debt helmer Assaf Bernstein attached to direct.

In The Tall GrassStatus: In DevelopmentWith a filmography that includes titles like Cube and Splice, Vincenzo Natali has proven more than a few times that he is quite adept at terrifying an audience, and now it looks like he'll get his chance to do that some more using some Stephen King material. The filmmaker has been developing In The Tall Grass since Spring 2015, based on the novella penned by King and his son, Joe Hill. The story follows a young man and his pregnant sister who stop to try and help when they hear the cries of a young boy coming from the tall grass in a roadside field. Naturally, all that awaits for them in the brush is pure terror.

The TommyknockersStatus: In DevelopmentJames Wan has more than enough credits to be called a modern horror master - but one venture he has not undertaken so far in his career is helming a Stephen King adaptation. That won't exactly happen with The Tommyknockers, based on the author's 1987 novel, but he is on-board as a producer. Set in Maine, this actually leans more toward science-fiction than horror, as it centers on a small neighborhood that is slowly preyed upon by a mysterious extraterrestrial object in the woods.
