Marvel Asked For Loki To Be 'A Villain As Good As Magneto,' Thor Writer Reveals

One of the strongest criticisms of the MCU for a long time was that it had a villain problem. Despite producing iconic heroes left and right, Marvel Studios could never quite create a memorable villain. During the early phases of the MCU, the notable exception was Loki, who would be labeled as Marvel's best villain before he finally got some competition. Apparently, Marvel knew early on that it had to nail Loki, and executives told Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz that his top priority was making Loki as good a villain as Magneto.

Way back in the early days of of the MCU, Marvel Studios knew that it was building up to The Avengers. As such, studio execs had the idea that Loki would the villain of that film, but they were also aware that they weren't super great with making good villains. Iron Monger, Whiplash, and the Abomination were forgotten as soon as people left the theater.

So, if Loki had to be their Big Bad of Phase One, they needed to get it right. Here's what the studio told Zack Stentz when he was writing the screenplay for Thor.

It's a complicated issue because we had a very clear mandate when we were writing Thor. They already knew that they were building towards The Avengers and they already had the notion that Loki was going to be the villain. They knew that their villains thus far in the MCU had been a bit underwhelming, and they said -- one of the executives literally said, 'Look, if you fail at everything else, give us a villain as good as Magneto in Loki.' We need someone at that level because thats going to be our villain for The Avengers.

Back in 2011, The Dark Knight's Joker was the villain to beat, but before that film came along, Magneto was probably the best modern day comic book movie villain. He appeared in every X-Men movie, he had cool powers, and the audience could sympathize with his rationale because of his sad backstory.

Loki certainly has the audience's sympathy. Zack Stentz told The Fanboy Podcast that while writing the character, he knew that one of the most important things for making Loki a great villain is that he had to be relatable.

We always put a lot of effort into our villains, but in this case we really worked hard giving Loki an interesting story and making him sympathetic at the same time as he's doing these terrible things.

I would say that Zack Stentz and his fellow Thor writers certainly gave Marvel what they wanted. Loki went on to become a huge hit with fans, and even after all these years he's still in the Top Five of MCU villains. Of course, a lot of the credit also goes to Tom Hiddleston for his performance as the character.

Loki's movie future was made unclear by Avengers: Endgame, but the character will be the star of his very own mini-series on Disney+, which doesn't have a release date yet. Magneto, currently played by Michael Fassbender, will be seen on screen again soon in Dark Phoenix, which opens in theaters July 7.

Nostalgia has proved a powerful tool in the entertainment industry, heralding in endless reboots and sequels. This has also extended to the horror genre, as a new Halloween movie will arrive this year. A Child's Play reboot is also in the works, with Audrey Plaza attached to play the film's protagonist. Chucky is returning in a new and updated franchise, and the iconic villain is getting a brand new look for the upcoming slasher flick. He's not the Good Guy you know and love, and now Chucky creator and Child's Play franchise writer Don Mancini has responded to the new look in the shadiest way possible.

Ouch. Don Mancini is not happy with Chucky's look in the new Child's Play movie, and he's not afraid to make that known. But rather than tearing into the upcoming reboot with his words, he allowed the always iconic Mariah Carey to handle it instead. Thanks, Twitter.

For those who don't know, Mariah Carey's utterance of "I don't know her" has become somewhat of a catch phrase over the past few years. The origin comes from her feud with Jennifer Lopez, with Carey constantly repeating that she doesn't know J.Lo. Even though... we all know J.Lo. It's become a legendary moment of sass, one that Don Mancini seems all to happy to utilize in order to show his disdain for the Child's Play reboot.

Don Mancini's feelings toward the Child's Play reboot shouldn't be too much of a surprise, considering the writer/director's long history with the franchise. Mancini helped create Chucky with the original film, and stayed on for all the subsequent sequels. In addition to writing and producing the sequels, he also directed the past few installments. Chucky is Mancini's baby, and now the character is being handed over to someone else.

Since Don Mancini isn't involved in the Child's Play reboot, it should be interesting how different the upcoming movie is. In addition to being written by someone new, the reboot will also change up its format a bit. It'll reportedly be focused on a group of kids a la Stranger Things, and Chucky will be getting some technological improvements as well. What those might be are a mystery.

Sebastian Stan Denies Talks About Becoming Captain America

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big mystery right now, as the dust (pun intended) is still settling after the wild events of Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers did the impossible, balancing action and heart for a stunning ensemble project. Fans are waiting to see what comes next with the still untitled Avengers 4 movie, especially since it brings the end to many of the stars' contracts.

One actor who seems to be headed to the door is Chris Evans aka Captain America. His Steve Rogers is a staple of the MCU, and it's unclear what the studio is planning to do with the franchise upon his exit. Many are hoping that another Avenger might take on the mantle of Captain America, such as Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes. He was recently asked if there were plans, saying:

No. Not really, no. It's usually like a dream. People might mention something, but we never go that way.

Well, that seems pretty cut and dry. While Marvel actors have to be appropriately cagey about most questions, Sebastian Stan pretty much denies that he'll be taking on a shield and leading The Avengers. Considering the character's current trajectory, that would stand to reason.

Sebastian Stan's comments come from his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and may put to bed some of the myriad fan theories currently flying around about Captain America. Chris Evans has seemingly already said goodbye to Steve Rogers, but it's unlikely that Marvel Studios would abandon one of its tried and true properties. But that means someone else is going to need to replace Steve as Cap.

Bucky Barnes seemed like a prime target, considering his long tenure with the Captain America franchise. Bucky has been in all three of the trilogy, in addition to his role in Avengers: Infinity War, and brief cameo in Black Panther. He knows Steve better than anyone, and now that he's free of mind control; it would be the perfect time to the Winter Soldier to take on a new mantle.

But it looks like Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes will get new life in an interesting way: a possible TV show on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. The series is set to focus on Bucky and Falcon (Anthony Mackie), as they presumably fight crime and continue their superheroic buddy comedy. Empire writer and co-executive producer Malcolm Spellman is slated to write the series, as Marvel's biggest and best chracters transition to the small screen.

Falcon is another character that fans thought might take on the mantle of Captain America, so it's interesting that they'll be put together on a TV show. Tom Hiddleston will also get his own Disney+ series, as well as possibly Vision and Scarlet Witch.

Bucky will presumably return to the MCU when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters May 3rd. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
