5 Coolest Moments In Ready Player One

SPOILER WARNING: this spoils some of the best parts of Ready Player One, so come back after you've seen the movie.

Last weekend, Ready Player One finally arrived in theaters and while it didn't feel like it had a lot of buzz around it, people were nonetheless interested in the movie to see the huge amounts pop culture references that are literally walking around in any given scene. You could see a Ninja Turtle, Ryu from Street Fighter, and Hello Kitty all within the same breath and the movie has tons of fun showing these characters off. Leave it to Steven Spielberg to find the most fun way possible to show off these references without beating you over the head with it (for the most part).

Ready Player One largely takes place within the virtual reality world of the OASIS, where a player can essentially do anything. Making the audience feel like anything can happen, too, might be the movie's biggest accomplishments. This video game world combined with the near unlimited use of pop culture icons means that a good amount of cool stuff happens in this movie and these are just five of what we think are the coolest in no particular order.

The Big RaceThe driving plot (pun mostly not intended) of Ready Player One is that just about every player in the game is searching for an Easter Egg left behind by the deceased creator of the OASIS, which would give the payer who finds it full legal control of the virtual world. Players must find three keys, each one earned by winning a challenge hidden inside the game. The first is a race throughout a changing cityscape and it's insane. It's almost every famous vehicle in pop culture destroying each other in the sickest race of Mario Kart ever. On top of all of that, cars are chased by a T-Rex and King Kong. There's so much going on that it's hard to keep track of, but it's definitely an exciting way to start things off.

The Iron Giant Enters The FightThe Iron Giant has been pretty heavily featured in the marketing campaign for the movie, and the big guy does not disappoint in the least. He doesn't get in on the action until the climactic battle at the end when an army of players battle against the villainous corporation IOI for control of the final key. The Iron Giant is a big gun on the side of the good guys and he has no trouble dispatching evil players with his eye beams and laser cannon. It's true that The Iron Giant is entirely about pacifism and avoiding the use of weapons, but this A) is a video game world, B) not the actual Iron Giant, and C) it's really cool. The Iron Giant also gets to take part in a really cool fight that we'll get into later.

Art3mis Behind Enemy LinesToward the back half of the film, Samantha -- who goes by her avatar Art3mis in the game world -- is taken hostage by IOI and forced to work in one of their vaguely defined loyalty centers. Luckily for Art3mis, this places her in a key position right inside the enemy headquarters during the most crucial moment of the final challenge. With the help of her friends, Art3mis is able to escape her cell/workstation, but she decides to stay and masquerade as an enemy soldier inside the OASIS. While in the game, she manages to single-handedly take out an impenetrable magic force field surrounding the enemy castle that was keeping out all the good players. She then proceeds to join the battle and kick lots of butt, but she does this while still inside IOI headquarters, meaning that she's in actual real-life danger.

Recreating The ShiningYou need to know two things about the OASIS: anything is possible, and it was made by a total dweeb. This means that the second key is hidden inside of a level that perfectly recreates the classic horror movie The Shining all the way down to the creepy twin girls. This whole sequence is an absolute blast. One of the main characters, Aech (Lena Waithe), hates scary movies and has never seen The Shining, which means that she falls into some seriously deadly traps from the movie, like the river of blood and the creepy, naked bathroom lady. Don't worry, the dog-faced guy doesn't show up. The only thing that would have made it better is if they were actually allowed to use Jack Nicholson's likeness to recreate "Here's Johnny!"but it's still an insanely fun scene.

Gundam Vs MechagodzillaThe entire final action set piece is full of moments that would make decent additions to this list, but none of them are quite as memorable as this. In a moment that truly captures the idea of taking two action figures and mashing them together, good guy Daito (Win Morisaki) transforms into a life-size Gundam and fights MechaGodzilla, who's piloted by the evil CEO, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn). For fans of either of these properties, this is a massive treat, and even people who aren't as familiar can likely find something to enjoy in a Japanese anime robot with a laser sword battling a mechanical dinosaur. These only get ramped up even further when the Iron Giant steps in to help finish things off with style.

Terry Crews Says He Turned Down Expendables 4 Because Of Threat From Producer

It's been four years since The Expendables 3 hits theaters, and while it was uncertain for a while if another movie was in the cards, The Expendables 4 was finally confirmed to be in the works earlier this year. Just like the previous Expendables movies, the next installment will see action stars both current and from yesteryear teaming up for explosive, blockbuster shenanigans. However, one star who will not be returning for The Expendables 4 is Terry Crews, as the actor stated he had been warned of "troubles" by one of the upcoming movie's producers if Crews did not withdraw a civil suit. When asked if he has a role in The Expendables 4, Crews responded:

No. Simply because this same producer is under his own ... investigation. Abusers protect abusers --- and this is one thing I had to decide, whether I was going to draw the line on. Am I going to be a part of this or am I gonna take a stand, and there are projects I had to turn down.

Terry Crews has been one of the most consistent voices in the #MeToo movement since it began late last year, with Crews talking about his experience being groped by a Hollywood agent at a party in 2016. Crews has since been filed a lawsuit against this agent, who has been identified as Adam Venit, and his talent company, William Morris Endeavor, for sexual assault. As Crews revealed while speaking in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee today (via Deadline) about the Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights, apparently Avi Lerner, the main producer on the Expendables series, had called Crews' manager and asked that he to drop the lawsuit. Crews opted not to reprise Hale Caesar for The Expendables 4.

Even though The Expendables 4 is definitely moving forward, there's little we know about what the fourth outing of this franchise holds in store. So far Sylvester Stallone is the only actor confirmed to be back, having lead the other movies as Barney Ross. However, it was reported last year that Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise Lee Christmas and Trench Hauser, respectively. Productions on The Expendables 4 is expected to begin early next year. As for Terry Crews, he recently appeared as Bedlam in Deadpool 2, and he's still playing Terry Jeffords in the TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which was picked up by NBC days after Fox cancelled it back in May.

The Expendables 4 doesn't have an assigned release date yet, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates. In the meantime, you can look through our 2018 release schedule to find out what movies are coming out later this year.

The First Crimes Of Grindelwald Screening Has Happened, Here Are The Early Reactions

Most of us will get to see Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald when it officially hits theaters on November 16. However, a lucky few fans were able to see the movie early thanks to an advance screening at Universal Studios Hollywood and their first reactions to the second flick in the Fantastic Beasts franchise are overwhelmingly positive. In fact, one person even gave Crimes Of Grindelwald a huge vote of confidence in her early review, noting,

For a more thorough explanation of why the flick works, LA Online Film Critics Society's Scott Menzel says of the movie,

Of course, not everyone loved Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald during its early screening, but many people seem to at least think this one is better than the first story following Newt Scamander and co.

The big takeaway, however, seems to be that Fantastic Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald was an utterly shocking movie. So, expect the unexpected during opening weekend.

Although we know the new flick will feature backstory for characters that was originally referenced in J.K. Rowling's popular Harry Potter series, and we've also seen plenty of footage from characters like Newt Scamander and even the adorable Niffler in the trailers for the movie, it seems as if there will be more to the story than fans may have guessed. In fact the #protectthesecrets hashtag the movie seems to be bandying about is teasing a big twist that may make Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald even more exciting than Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Of course, it should be noted there is added excitement around a movie when fans get to see it before almost everyone else in the world. Still, the fact that most people seem really pumped about what they saw in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald at least indicates the project isn't a hot mess. Plus, if fans have the last word, there's a lot to look forward to with the new movie:

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will hit theaters later this month on November 16, with some preview showings the evening before on November 15. There will be plenty of competition for the movie around the Thanksgiving holiday, so be sure to check out our full movie premiere schedule to see what else will be hitting theaters during the holidays. If you'd like to know more about The Crimes of Grindelwald ahead of the premiere, take a look at our full guide.

Well, turns out a screening from last night at my local theatre was The Crimes of Grindelwald. It was a screening just about 2.5 hours long with pre-special fx (which will be brushed up by release). Shazam! Box Office: DC's Latest Is Off To An Impressive Start

Things weren't looking so good for the DC Extended Universe after the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League. Not only did it receive a rather serious thrashing from critics, but it also failed to meet box office expectations. Fortunately, however, the franchise has been on a much better path ever since. Released last December, James Wan's Aquaman has become the most successful DC Comics adaptation ever made, and now David F. Sandberg's Shazam! is off to a fantastic start as well. Check out its numbers, as well as the rest of the Top 10, below, and join me after for analysis!

The numbers aren't exactly record-shattering, but after its third day in wide release Shazam! is definitely in a good place, and Warner Bros. must surely be happy about the performance. Early estimates suggested that the film wouldn't only make $40-$50 million during its opening weekend, and it was able to not only clear that bar, but add a few extra million on top of it. Add in the fact that it's one of the less expensive modern day superhero blockbusters - made for a reported $100 million - and you have the makings of a legitimate winner in the DC Comics realm.

What surely helped in a major way with this one is just the buzz that the film has received. The studio clearly knew they had a winner with this one, and thanks to a whole lot of early screenings Shazam! has been riding high on positive word of mouth for quite a while now. It's received the second highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any DC Extended Universe title, with its 91% only just a little below the 93% earned by Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman back in 2017. On top of that, audiences are also showing some very real appreciation for it, as CinemaScore is reporting an "A" grade for the release - which makes a whole lot of sense when you consider what a crowd-pleaser the feature is.

Adding to the good news is that Shazam! is also off to a wonderful start in foreign territories as well. The movie is now out in most places, and ticket sales from abroad have already significantly bolstered the worldwide box office totals. To date it has made $102 million abroad, which brings its global total to $158.8 million. When you factor in publicity and advertising costs, it still probably has to make a bit more money before it gets to be called profitable, but this is a great place for the film to be after just three days. It's technically the slowest start for a DC Extended Universe title, but the previous film with that distinction was Aquaman, and we know how things turned out with that.

Perhaps part of the reason why Shazam! didn't open bigger is because it had some real competition at the box office, as Kevin Klsch and Dennis Widmyer's Pet Sematary also put up some legitimate numbers this past weekend. Critics (61% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("C+" on CinemaScore) didn't respond to it quite as well as the big new superhero release, but the $25 million it brought it is nothing to shake a stick at. Not only did the horror film only cost $21 million to make, but it actually had the second best opening ever for a Stephen King adaptation - which is a pretty big deal when you consider how popular King is, and how many movies have been made based on his books. Obviously it came nowhere close to Andres Muschietti's IT, which pulled in a shocking $123.4 million during its first three days back in September 2017, but it made enough to take the second place spot away from Mikael Hafstrom's 1408, which made $20.6 million back in 2007. It's also doing pretty well in foreign territories, having made $17.3 million outside of North America so far.

Robin Bissell's The Best Of Enemies was the only other big title to hit theaters this weekend, though it had a relatively small wide release with only 1,705 theaters showing it. Still, with the star power of Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, and a powerful true story to tell, the movie managed to take sixth place over all, and make $4.5 million in its initial release. That's not too shabby when you consider the $10 million budget. It won't ultimately be as big as The Upside, which made $107.6 million for STX Entertainment earlier this year, but it may still wind up making some money for the studio.

Beyond the new releases, unfortunately, there wasn't a ton of good news for Hollywood this time around. After winning the box office last week with a disappointing $45 million take, Tim Burton's Dumbo fell by 60.4 percent in its second Friday-to-Saturday stretch. As of now it $213.7 million globally, which seems like a lot, but that number doesn't look so great when you consider that it was made with a $170 million budget. It's going to be seriously tough for the film to be ultimately considered profitable - but the good news for Disney is that they still have Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel performing exceptionally, having crossed the $1 billion milestone earlier this week.

Jordan Peele's Us is also starting to fade a bit, but at this point ever dollar the movie makes is pure profit. Made for just $20 million, the horror hit has already brought in $216.6 million worldwide, which is only just a big short of the $255.4 million that Get Out made when it was released in 2017. That's absolutely remarkable.

Next week we will once again be seeing a lot of variety hitting the big screen nationwide, with Neil Marshall's Hellboy, Tina Gordon Chism's Little, Laika's Missing Link, and Jenny Gage's After all arriving in wide release. Collectively they should all do a pretty nice job shaking up the Top 10, so be sure to tune in next Sunday to see how it all turns out.
