The Major Goosebumps Monster R.L. Stine Still Wants To See On The Big Screen

Reader Beware: Spoilers for Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween are in play. If you want to avoid any details for the film's plot, please bookmark this piece until after you've seen the film.

Throughout the course of two major motion pictures, the Goosebumps franchise has seen a lot of the monsters from R.L. Stine's pages come to life. And yet, there's still plenty of them left untapped, waiting for their moment on the big screen. Even Stine himself realizes this, as CinemaBlend's recent interview with him revealed that he wants to see the following story go Hollywood:

They haven't really done [The Haunted Mask.] You know, there are a lot of masks in the new movie, right? But no one's ever done the mask that sticks to your face and becomes part of you. I always thought The Haunted Mask was my best Halloween story.

CinemaBlend learned this fact during a phone interview with R.L. Stine, in celebration of Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween's release this weekend. Naturally, the talk turned to what monsters haven't been shown the celluloid treatment just yet, as Stine's prolific book series has yielded a wide variety of ghosts, ghouls, and creatures of all sorts. So obviously, it's going to be hard to get them all on the screen, without a lot of work.

Published in 1993, The Haunted Mask tells the story of Carly Beth, a girl who's bullied and picked on as most YA protagonists are. In true Goosebumps fashion, she finds an enchanted mask that starts to change how she acts, allowing her to intimidate her bullies, and become more and more frightening as the book goes on. Naturally, she can't remove this mask until she learns a powerful lesson, with the book ending on a classic R.L. Stine cliffhanger.

While the story was adapted as the first Goosebumps TV episode in 1995, and also lent itself to three literary sequels, it's never been properly featured in the films. This is kind of strange, considering it's not only one of the most well-known books in the whole series, it's also a very personal book for R.L. Stine. He revealed the genesis for the story, as follows:

That's the only Goosebumps book that was inspired by something that happened in real life. I think it's the only one. When my son Matt was a little guy, it was Halloween time. He was trying on a green, rubber Frankenstein mask and I was watching from the doorway. He pulled it down over his head and he couldn't get it off. And I'm watching. He was tugging, tugging, and the mask wouldn't come off and I thought, 'What a great idea!' I should have helped him, right? I should have helped him instead, I thought, 'great idea for a story,' and that's where The Haunted Mask came from.

Thinking back to the film, there actually is a bit of a nod to The Haunted Mask that does make its way into Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, via Chris Parnell's character, Walter. When Slappy the Dummy raises his army in the second act, he transforms Walter into a monster using a Halloween mask and some magic. While that's not exactly a one-for-one adaptation, it's definitely a sign that this universe is open to such magic.

Marvel Will Feature 2 LGBT Characters In The Near Future

In the past few years, there's been an increased conversation about representation and onscreen diversity in the media. After scandals like #OscarsSoWhite and #TimesUp, the call for more inclusive characters in blockbusters has grown. This extends to franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (both of which are owned by Disney). Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently spoke about about the call for LGBT inclusion in the MCU, and revealed that there are concrete plans to have visible queer characters in the behemoth shared universe. Feige was recently asked about Marvel's plans, where he revealed that there's going to be at least two queer characters in the future.

This potentially game changing announcement comes from Kevin Feige's recent conversation with The Playlist. When asked if there were concrete plans for LGBT characters, Feige confirmed that there's at least one MCU character we've already met, as well as a newcomer who has yet to make their debut in the shared universe. And just like that, there are confirmed to be at least two non-heterosexual characters in one of the biggest franchises in film history.

Kevin Feige's comments are sure to be exciting for advocates who were hoping for a more inclusive MCU. Additionally, it's also likely going to be the start of countless fan theories. The revelation that one of the upcoming LGBT characters has already been in a Marvel blockbuster means we've missed something, and folks are going to be combing through the past 19 releases until an official confirmation happens.

One of the most likely choices would be Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, who made her MCU debut in Thor: Ragnarok. While Valkyrie's sexuality wasn't explored in the threequel, Thompson claimed she was playing a queer character throughout various interviews and press junkets. Kevin Feige hasn't exactly confirmed that Valkyrie was the character he was referencing, but it would make sense. Now we just need her return after being noticeably absent in Avengers: Infinity War.

As far as which new LGBT character may be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's anyone's guess. The future of the MCU after Avengers 4 is largely a mystery, as its unclear if we'll be getting another pre-planned phase of movies. It's also unknown how the characters who perished in Infinity War would function in the greater MCU, especially with heroes like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy expected to receive new sequels. We'll just have to wait and see who ends up really dying in the next Avengers movie, and which heroes get to continue their tenure in the MCU.

The Time Jurassic Park's Joseph Mazzello Really Did Get Injured By A Dinosaur On Set

Thanks to an asteroid and poor near-Earth object collision detection at the time, dinosaurs weren't around to show up in Jurassic Park. The film instead used practical effects and computer animation to bring the creatures to life, which is probably much safer than using actual dinosaurs anyways. But that's not without its own perils. Joseph Mazzello, who played Tim in the film, found this out the hard way when he was injured by a dinosaur on set, as he explained:

It was a raptor on wheels that was to follow me, and I'm supposed to go left, and it's supposed to go to the right. We did a bunch of takes. And one time I went left and I sort of turned around to look up and see the raptor turning the same way as me. And its claw, which was metal, hit me in the head because I was that height. And I fell down. I was a little bit dazed. It also was my birthday. I turned 9 years old. And so Steven (Spielberg) after checking that I was okay, said, 'I think this is the perfect time for this,' and had the entire crew sing happy birthday to me.

What Joseph Mazzello is describing is part of the memorable kitchen scene where one of the raptors chases Tim into the freezer, and he and Lex manage to lock it inside. This is just one of the many traumatic experiences Tim endures during the course of Jurassic Park, but it sounds like actor Joseph Mazzello suffered a real injury as well during this scene.

You can imagine how this could happen filming a scene like this, where he had to run and turn with a raptor on wheels close behind him. All it took was for him to look up and the raptor to go the wrong way. Boom, raptor claw to the head!

Thinking back to Jurassic Park, you might have thought that one of the parts where Tim is climbing, like the electric fence scene, would have had the greater potential for injury, but I guess this just shows that even artificial raptors are not to be trifled with.

Fortunately, the nine-year-old Joseph Mazzello had only suffered mild head trauma and was just a bit dazed from his run in with the metal claw. It sounds like it was quite the memorable experience too, considering, as Joseph Mazzello told Today that it happened on his birthday.

So in order to give the kid a break, Steven Spielberg made sure he was okay and had everyone sing him 'Happy Birthday.' That's got to be something, being that young, on a movie set with fake dinosaurs and having people sing to you. Sure, getting hit in the head couldn't have been fun, but spending your ninth birthday on the set of what would become an iconic film and having legendary director Steven Spielberg sing you 'Happy Birthday,' I'd say that's a net win.

With the new Jurassic World films, we often talk about the brief return of Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and our hopes to see original characters like Laura Dern's Ellie Sattler or Sam Neill's Alan Grant show up in Jurassic World 3. That would be awesome, but it would also be great to see Joseph Mazzello's Tim and/or Ariana Richards' Lex appear in the new trilogy.

The closest the films have come to acknowledging this is in Jurassic Park III (2001) when Grant says "What Hammond, and Ingen, did at Jurassic Park was to create genetically-engineered theme park monsters, nothing more; nothing less." -- the novel at least made it clear that the clones are just approximations, and not real dinosaurs.
