How Nic Cage Feels About Playing Superman In Teen Titans Go! To The Movies
For years, DC has been known for the strength of its animation. From Batman: The Dark Knight Returns to Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, movies produced in the animated DC realm have encompassed wide ranges of genres and styles. The latest project on deck is Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which features Nicolas Cage as the voice of Superman. Many fans have waited decades for a Nic Cage Superman performance, but Cage recently opened up about the project to admit that it's a very different take on the Man of Steel than what he would've done with Tim Burton back in the 1990s. The actor explained:
It wasn't really the version that Tim Burton and I had in mind, but it was just fun. It was terrific. It was just nice to be involved in something my kid loves and we got to do it together.
Right off the bat, it's interesting to note that Nic Cage's take on Superman in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies isn't all that reminiscent of the Superman that he would've played in Tim Burton's Superman Lives. The Raising Arizona star's ill-fated take on the Man of Steel has become iconic to geeks who know about that never-made film, and the prospect of him finally getting to voice Supes in an animated DC adventure seemed like a great way to bring that incarnation of the character to life. Nevertheless, this is a different take on Superman that Nicolas Cage enjoyed because it allowed him to tap into something more family friendly, which would let him watch Teen Titans Go! To The Movies with his son, who is actually named Kal-El after Superman and voices young Bruce Wayne in the film.
That makes a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. Though we never actually saw Tim Burton's take on Superman (aside from leaked photos and behind-the-scenes tests that they did on suits), what we do know about the movie suggests that Superman Lives would've had a darker edge consistent with the style of the director. With Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Cage got to take a more lighthearted approach to the Man of Tomorrow, and per his remarks to USA Today, it was fun to embrace something with a family-friendly tone.
Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is currently in theaters. Check it out to see the offbeat versions of these DC icons for yourself, and if you're waiting for something a bit more adult-oriented, then you can watch out for the DCEU's solo Aquaman movie later this year on December 21. As for Nic Cage, he's not done voicing superheroes yet, as he's also lined up to voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will premiere on December 14.

The Funny Way Captain Marvels Editor Convinced Kevin Feige To Hire Her
Captain Marvel is just under two months away from release, and with every new piece of footage and Samuel L. Jackson slip up, the excitement is growing for Marvel fans. When I spoke to the film's co-editor, Debbie Berman, yesterday, she said she's still in the "thick of" getting Captain Marvel ready. She's just as excited as all of us about the release of Marvel's first female-led superhero flick and has a hilarious story about how she nabbed a spot in the editing bay. In her words:
I wanted to work on Captain Marvel the second I heard it was announced. So the whole time I was on Spider-Man, I bought a Captain Marvel T-shirt, and every single time I knew Kevin Feige and the other Marvel execs were coming into editorial, I'd wear my Captain Marvel shirt. I just wanted to create a subconscious association between myself and Captain Marvel. I'd imagine one day all the executives would be sitting together and be like, 'Who should we get for Captain Marvel?' And then someone would say, 'I don't know why, but when I think of Captain Marvel, for some reason I think Debbie Berman.' And then I'd imagine everyone going. 'Yeah, me too. That's so weird. It must be a sign.' When we were on Captain Marvel, on the first day after shooting and the directors were there and I was of course wearing the same Captain Marvel shirt, Kevin Feige came over and one of the directors looked at me and said, 'Wow, this looks really old. Is it vintage?'. I said 'No, it's just really well worn'. And then Kevin Feige piped up, 'Oh yeah, she wore that on Spider-man all the time!' Okay. I guess he noticed.
This is genius. Why pitch your interest or pester Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige when you can send a subconscious message through your clothing? It's no wonder Debbie Berman is part of one of 2019's most anticipated movies considering her persistence and smart tactics. Anyone else taking notes?
It does help that Debbie Berman was already in the room with the Marvel boss on a regular basis as an editor for 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was around the same time Kevin Feige was on the market for a Captain Marvel editor. Berman originally started wearing the shirt in hopes they'd subconsciously associate her with the superhero, but later imagined they might just do it in hopes she'd stop wearing the shirt all the time.
Debbie Berman also worked as an editor on Black Panther. Since she is originally from South Africa, the film felt uniquely personal to her and she made it clear to Marvel about how important the film was to her.
When Debbie Berman was on Black Panther, she certainly had an impact on some of the film's final choices. In our interview, she said she inspired a reshoot of a portion of the final massive action sequence to include more badass female Jabari warriors, after the original sequence had the Dora Milaje being saved by an all-male Jabari tribe.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler made the editing room a safe space to voice any issues with the film, and having these fearless women being introduced on screen, only to have to be rescued by men just didn't sit well. While a small detail, it likely strengthened the film's attention to representation.
Looking forward to Captain Marvel, there's something exciting about having a woman's perspective on the cutting room floor, along with co-director Anna Boden, who also shares writing credits on the film's screenplay alongside Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Ryan Fleck. Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, comes to theaters on March 8. It's already in the MCU's top three pre-sale performers, so expect this superhero film to soar high.

Superhero movies have become the biggest genre in filmmaking over the past few years, in no small part due to the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plenty of studios have gotten in on the action since Iron Man debuted in 2007, and the genre is about to get more complicated since Disney officially acquired Fox. This seemingly put Fox properties like X-Men in jeopardy, although The House of Mouse already made it clear that the Deadpool franchise was here to stay.
Just how Ryan Reynolds' signature mercenary will work under the Disney umbrella is a total mystery, as is his possible inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans may be concerned about the Deadpool franchise being held back in the new studio, Kevin Feige is here to quell your fears. He recently spoke about Disney CEO Bob Iger's intentions with Wade Wilson, saying:
When we were purchased, Bob said to us, If its not broke, dont fix it.' Theres no question that Deadpool is working, so why would we change it?
Well, that's a relief. While Deadpool's future with the MCU is still a mystery, cinephiles should rest easy knowing that Ryan Reynolds' franchise won't be given the Disney gloss for future installments. So we should expect plenty of violence, cursing, and fourth-wall-breaking in Deadpool 3 and/or X-Force.
Kevin Feige's comments to Variety should please the many Deadpool fans out there who might be nervous about his adoption by Disney. The franchise became such a massive success because Ryan Reynolds brought something totally unique to the franchise. He references the various cinematic universes, and Wade Wilson is constantly making jokes that aren't family friendly. It's this comedic approach to the genre that has resonated with audiences, as well as casual moviegoers who simply want to enjoy an R-rated comedy.
Deadpool's rating has been the biggest concern about Disney's acquisition of the property, as dumbing down a future installment to PG-13 would lose the spirit of the franchise. But Kevin Feige's recent statement indicates that Bob Iger isn't planning on making any liberal changes to the successful property. Considering what a massive box office and critical success the first two movies were, it stands to reason that he'd let Ryan Reynolds and company continue doing their thing.
While the details regarding the Disney and Fox deal are still coming to light for the public, one thing is clear: Wade Wilson is going to have a field day referencing the events of the merger when he returns to theaters. Deadpool loves referencing the various cinematic universes, and now that his franchise is at the center of two of them colliding, the jokes will write themselves.
